I did search for this but found no info. I have just installed Abyss (had it before but have just set it up again) and I have a conflict with my HOSTS file. If I click on a link while surfing and it is blocked by the HOSTS file I get redirected to the local server and get a lovely view of my own website. Is there a way around this or is it a case of Abyss server and no HOSTS file or HOSTS file but no server? |

kev1952,
Hosts file is not used by Abyss Web Server. It is rather used by your browser to know what IP to use for a domain name.
Can you please post here your hosts file contents and tell us in what way is there a conflict? _________________ Support Team

Aprelium, one method of ad blocking is to simply list all servers which serve up banners in the hosts file as 127.0.0.1 - rerouting all browser traffic which would normally be loading up an advert to localhost (which normally would not have a browser running)

kev1952 - why not redirect the hosts to some other unused IP. I believe you can replace them with 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1 and still block ads but without accessing localhost everytime...
If 0.0.0.0 causes problems, use a dummy IP of a non existant machine on your LAN. _________________

Thanks. I found out this morning that it is only a problem if I click on a link that is listed in the HOSTS file. It has no problem as far as blocking an indirect link. Will leave it as is for now and see how it goes. Thanks for the input. |

The problem re-occured so I took Anonymoose' advice and changed the redirect to 0.0.0.0 and that seems to have solved the problem. I did think of doing that before but wasn't sure it would work. Thanks again folks! |
