Ok, now I'm gonna install Linux. Problem is there are about 400 different distros, and I need a reccomendation.

Ones that run the best as a desktop and/or server, please.

I did some googling - nothing really that reliable.

Searched here about - mostly cmx talking about Mepis.

Reccomend away. If you want, you can post links to the Distro you reccomend. To make it easier, I'll keep track of them up here.

The distro that i am using at the moment on my main machine is mandrake 10.1 (now known as mandriva)

i havent had that much problems, the installation is straight forward and you can set it up easily to dual-boot with windows.

the distro that i am using on my lill server is freebsd 5.2.1.

the installation process is not as friendly as mandrake, being mainly text based, but i managed after i found some more indepth documentation.

the computer im running it on is a 75MHz IBM/Cyrix. after a reinstall i didn't install a gui, or x but in the past the computer has managed well with the gui

i am looking into trying a new distro, and i think i will try either slakeware or gentoo _________________ Anthony R

Also, feel free to reccomend something that's already reccomended. If I have one, or more, that have been reccomended multiple times by multiple people, I'll probably choose it.

Thanks for any and all suggestions in advance!!!!! |

There are lots of distros to try as a first but SUSE was supposed to be the best for someone with no Linux knowledge. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I know this isnt linux, but I just installed it on an older pc I have and it is very stable.

And if you want to try it instead of installing it to your HD try this:

p3 do you have a second pc for your server? If you do I would highly recomend FreeBSD for a server... here is some good and bad things about it (along with windows and linux)

Check the reply - this is a fairly recent post. Doesn't look promising, especially if you're just getting started with Linux. The suggestion offered there should work, but you might have problems getting going. _________________

This looks like it may take a massive amount of time...

They did Mandriva does recognize it...

Perhaps I should use that for the time being...

Unfortunatley, the only Mepis user I know of here is CmXflash, and, as I'm sure you know, we aren't exactly on the best of terms... Oh well... I guess I'll use Mandriva for now until by some miracle I get it working.

There's a difference between recognising it and supporting it. Recognising a piece of hardware is easy - the same as when you don't have drivers for something installed and it shows up with a ? in the Windows Hardware Mangler. Just because Mandriva recognised that one was plugged in doesn't mean that it was working - it's still the same Linux kernel, with the same total lack of support from Netgear. You'll still have to hack your way through NDISWrapper - which I think is also included in Mepis, if you check. _________________
