I can't quite seem to get things working right, and I haven't found anyone with quite the same problem on the forum (I could be wrong about that, so I apologize in advance, but I did look pretty thoroughly).
I am trying to set up a server on a win XP pro (sp1, not sp2) computer that is wired to a Nertgear WGR 614v4 router. Ever since I have installed the software I cannot get the computer to use the internet. I will turn on my computer and the server will come on and say it is working, but I will have no internet or network access. Normally when I look at the status of my LAN connection it will show that I have been assigned an IP address 192.168.0.5 by the DHCP server, etc..., but now it says automatic IP address 169.254.*.* and none of the other fields (DNS, gateway, etc.) are filled in. When I hit the repair button it fails to renew the IP address. Technically I guess the server is working since I can type in http://127.0.0.1:port and it will show my site, but that is all useless if it is interfering with my network/internet connection. The weird thing is that once (and only once), when I restarted my computer it worked normally with internet access and all, but after 5 min for no apparent reason just stopped working and would no longer give me network or internet access. Under status it still said my local IP address was 192.168.0.5 and all the other gateway and DNS info was correct, but when I try to renew, it failed. I have tried changing ports, but that doesn't help. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my network adapter.
If anyone knows why this could be happening I would greatly appreciate your help.
Sorry I wrote so much, but I wanted to be sure that if anyone decided to help, they knew the whole story.
Thanks in advance!
PS I have the port forwarding on the router all setup and have the router set to always assign my comp the same network IP. I have used an FTP server in the past with no problems, so I think I have the router setup properly. |

pfunk1914,
This is a router configuration issue. Since you use DHCP, the router assigns you a new IP address each time the IP lease time expires. It's better to not use DHCP for the computer where you have servers running and for which port forwarding rules are set in the router. _________________ Support Team

After a whole lot of messing around with things, giving up, getting drunk, and retrying, I finally figured it out. Sometimes hardware problems coincide exactly with the installation of a new program making you think the program is messed up. I basically swapped out my ethernet cable and everything went back to normal. Sorry for making it sound like something was wrong with the program, but the coincidence could not have been better timed.
Thanks for your help. |
