I reinstalled MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin a number of times on my comp and on Abyss and I get the same exact error, no matter how many tutorials I find and use.. the error message I get is..

"phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in config.inc.php and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server."

and it's error #1045.. I used numerous tutorials in the forum but they don't work. And since I am a real newbie to MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin all together I really don't understand some guidelines I am given. Like I installed MySQL 4.1 Server and when I go on my Start menu to access it all it does is give me a DOS Command Client and many users have said that if you see a "green light", etc.. it works. There is no red, green or whatever color. It's basically like MySQL is not even there, well to me at least (and it's installed though). I've typed commands in the client and it shows errors and what not. I'm curious does MySQL have an interface, for example does it pop up like Abyss would and have it's certain features, etc.. because all I get is a DOS client and I've installed it many times. I'm starting to get a huge headache from it because I can't seem to start my site up without it.

Please help if you can.

Thanks

you know, i think the problem is that you are connecting with the wrong, or no, username and/or pasword.

try 'root' as the username, and omit the password.

#1045 is the most annoying error....

I've left 'root' alone being the username for MySQL and left the password field blank but I still get the same error no matter what. And since I'm confused when it comes to MySQL where do you see that there is a green light? All I get is the DOS Command Client and I get errors when I type in commands. I've reinstalled MySQL a number of times but when I try to start phpMyAdmin it gives me that 1045 error.

Also, when MySQL is loaded up how does the interface look because obviously I can't access it and I don't know where the green light is and what they mean by it.

When I first installed MySQL I was attempting to start it from the Start Menu in Win98. By using Explore and navigating to the proper folder, I was able to start it through the administrator. That's when I got the green light. Maybe this would work for you?

I tried right-click 'Explore' on the start menu went to it's path "C:\Program Files\MySQL\bin\mysql.exe" and some other .exe files but all I get is a DOS Prompt that pops up for a second and goes away moments later.

Where can I possibly get the green light or see anything of the MySQL database interface, etc.. (if there is one) because I've re-installed it as I've said before time and time again but I get the same thing when trying phpMyAdmin and testing scripts. I'm not much familiar with MySQL so I wouldn't no how it starts up and where and when you get the green light.

I've had the same problem with MySQL 4.1
I have used PHP4 and MySQL 4.0.13 for some time with no problems on 4 different systems including an intranet, but recently tried to set up PHP4 with MySQL 4.1
MySQL 4.1 comes with a new installer, and doesn't include the WinMySQL program that gave the red/green traffic lights with earlier MySQL versions. It does include a system tray utility that performs the same task.
With MySQL 4.1 I have been unable to get PHP to connect to the MySQL server, despite various permutations of host/username/password. MySQL 4.1 was working as I could access it through the command line.
Eventually I gave up and uninstalled MySQL 4.1, and installed the earlier 4.0.13 instead, which worked first time with no problems.
I have looked on the PHP.net and MySQL.com sites but can't find anything referring to how to solve this problem.
