Console access problem

Hope this is the right place to put this, couldn't find any similar posts about this topic so here goes.

have had abyss setup on my laptop and desktop for sometime (not acutally used it that much yet though)

came to use it today and found i couldn't access the console on my laptop
works fine on my desktop still
tried uninstalling and loading the latest version but still nothing

the only thing that has changed that i know of is that i have setup a network connecting the two machines using a netgear wireless router, desktop hardwired and laptop on wireless.

all i get is the standard 'page can not be displayed' message

not sure why this would stop me accessing the localhost but have run out of ideas

if anyone could help i would be very greatful
