After some 40 minutes all websites went down and when trying to visit any of my sites Chrome gave me a notice that the server responed with an invalid SSL response.
I rebooted the server and all seems fine now. I will keep an eye on it for the rest of the evening. _________________ https://www.arnauddeklerk.com

tfh,
Please let us know if this occurs again.
By the way, were there at that time a new ACME certificate that was being installed?
Is there a certificate in the ACME Bot which issuance date/time corresponding to the date/time of the behavior you have noticed? _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

I upgraded my X2 setup - had no issues whatsoever which is good!
Since this is my first time upgrading X2, I'm not used to it, and the download page said I would have to enter my new product key, but it never prompted me to. Is that normal? I haven't noticed any issues, anyway. _________________ Pigeonburger

I am having some weird behavior since the ugprade to 2.16.01 on Windows. Images and background images seem to load really slow. If I go back and the browser and go click on the link again to go to a phpbb forum page. It loads more of the banner and background each time.
Hopefully you can see an example going to www.pgsquad.com/pgforum/
I am also using google chrome as a browser. |

We suggest that you go to your customer zone (if you're an X2 customer) or download again Abyss Web Server X1 to get revision 2.16.0.2 which should fix the issue you have noticed. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

The current version uses the same product key from version 2.14.
So unless you have upgraded from a very old version, Abyss Web Server X2 will validate your already present product key and it won't ask for one. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

Ok, thank you I'll remember that for next time!
I also started having the same issue that jxxaxxy had in 2.16.01, but it seems to be fixed in the latest version so thank you for that! _________________ Pigeonburger

Since upgrading to the 2.16.xx series we have constant problems, and yes 2.16.02 is the latest version running.
Sometimes there is a crash report generated and sometimes the server process is still running but connections are not accepted so it looks like the website is down.
When the server is restarted everything runs fine (latest ACME certificate is Sep.28,2021) but 3 or 4 days later the server once again either crashes or just stops taking connections. |

If you are running on Window, you might be facing the same problems as I am.
You can try to disable http2 support
* Open the console
* Click on the Server Configuration icon
* Click on the Parameters icon
* Press Edit next to "Advanced Parameters"
* Press Edit next to "HTTP/2 Parameters"
* Check Disabled
* Press OK
* Press OK
* Press OK
* Press Restart
The issue is being worked on. _________________ https://www.arnauddeklerk.com

Forget my solution of running in http1.1 only mode.
This morning I found the server completely stuck again. _________________ https://www.arnauddeklerk.com

There seem to be some serious problems with Abyss 2.16.xx if you're running it in Windows, leading to crashes or an unsresponsive server. My website had over 15% downtime in the last 7 days.
After consulting with support, I've downgraded to 2.14.2. _________________ https://www.arnauddeklerk.com

I am from time to time running into the same issue where it just drops and stops responding. Only happens like once every 5 days or so. Hopefully they can figure out where the hang it. |

I also noticed since this version on windwows. It doesn't shut down all the php scripts running when stopping the service. Hopefully they can fix that too. |

Correct.. There are a few problems on Windows with 2.16.02.
* a build up of CGI/Fast CGI PHP.exe files that don't get closed after being used.
* After a certain time, abbyssws.exe stopt closing used threads, causing more and more threads to be opened and eventually causing abyssws to stop accepting connections or even crash.
This does seem to depend on the server load. A light website with only a few visitors will probable not suffer from this issue or only very limited.
A page with a lost of resources and more visitors wil display these problems a lot more. I wasn't able to keep 2.16.xx running for 24 hours before causing problems.
I've already tested quite some other versions sent to me by the support team. These guys are working very very hard to solve the probems. But I couldn't accept the downtime anymore, so last week I've returned to 2.14.02 and all is stable now... But the lack of http2 does make my site a lot slower.
I really hope the programmers are able to fix these issue soon.
but right now, i'd recommend downgrading to 2.14.02 if you're running Abyss Webserver on Windows (10??). _________________ https://www.arnauddeklerk.com

I'm running Abyss on Linux primarily, but I had the same issue. Many PHP processes were spawned, but they never terminated. It ate up my RAM and crashed my server. They resolved the issue for Linux back in April of 2019.
It does seem strange that the Windows problem is popping up with the release of Abyss that supports HTTP/2 though. _________________ Stephen

Hi all,
Thanks mainly to tfh's help as well as others who have send us reports, we were able to fix the issues you have described.
First of all, please note that the issue is not about HTTP/2: It is rather specific to the Windows version of Abyss Web Server and occurs only under some conditions. A deadlock inside Windows' NTDLL.DLL triggers a massive thread leak and misbehavior which causes a lot of damage to the process.
Some dangling Windows handles were also causing trouble after a long process lifetime.
All these issues affect only the Windows version.
The good news is that we have fixed them all. tfh has already a version that works fine (except for a minor unrelated issue that we're fixing right now.)
So we can confidently say that the problem is over and that a new revision is imminent. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

I'm happy to have helped with the testing. I also want to note that I am positively impressed about your support and how much effort you guys have put in solving these issues.
I see 123 e-mails back and forth in my e-mail box and 8 or 9 test-versions. But... we're there and the current version runs nicely.
It was a pleasure working with you guys! _________________ https://www.arnauddeklerk.com

tfh,
123 emails! We were not aware that it took much exchanges to get solved.
All the credits goes to your legendary patience and very detailed reports. Without your help, it would have taken a lot of time to detect the origin of this awkward bug. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

We're polishing it and integrating some extra improvements. But you can get the latest "test" revision which is confirmed to work fine by contacting us. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

This is a revision release so the improvements are mostly invisible on the surface.
They are mostly about speed ups for some operations and minor reverse-proxy enhancements in some use cases.
By the way, since HTTP/2 is now stable and working fine, the path is clear for working on adding new features in the next minor release.
Your suggestions for features are welcome. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

Well, I do have some "wishes" :)
I'd like a "server start/stop/restart" button in the webinterface :) It would have been quite hepfull in te recent period.
Something I would also like to see: Serverwide settings for headers/expires/compression/et... with the option per host to make alternative settings.
I have some 15 hosts set up, and if I would like to add a setting later on, I have to do it 15 times.
option for realtime minification for .html/js/css
A auto-generated page giving some historical & realtime data/graphics (serverwide or per host) showing info like number of visitors, connection, data, compression, threads, restarts, uptime, hits on certain file-types, etc... _________________ https://www.arnauddeklerk.com

Oh also everything that tfh said, especially "Serverwide settings for headers/expires/compression/etc", as I've had the same issue with having to change those settings on a bunch of sites to the exact same thing, to comply with what the cyber-insurance people want to see on even tiny little redirection websites. |

I've been having trouble with my security scan vendor being able to complete scans against my website since I upgraded to 2.16.0.2. They make hundreds of requests for files that do not exist on the server, and even at the slowest rate, the scans fail and usually take down Abyss.
Happy to report that the 2.16.1.9 version is working well, and has resolved all my security scan problems. |

HTTP/2 has make my decision to return back to the Abyss web server (after more thank year).
Repurchased license again. Works properly.
I hope maybe one day we will see a HTTP/3 :D |

Some dangling Windows handles were also causing trouble after a long process lifetime.
So we can confidently say that the problem is over and that a new revision is imminent. |

That's great to read about returning users and customers with 2.16 and HTTP/2.
We don't expect to start working on HTTP/3 until things clarify a bit. We plan to have the first test implementation around late 2022. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

Sorry but I'm not convinced the problems are completely solved.
I have upgraded to the latest version 2.16.1.9 running on Windows 8.1 x64 and I am still experiencing lockups where abyssws.exe is running in task manager but no connections are getting through (as if the web server is off line). The only difference I see between the latest version and the lockups experienced with 2.16.0.2 is there is no longer a crash report generated in the main abyss folder.
If running as a service I must stop the service then restart it for things to work again. If not running as a service I must close down the program and restart it.
The lockups are quite random and the server may run for a few days or only for a few hours before unresponsive and must be restarted.
If I revert back to 2.14.2 everything is fine again with no issues.
Any ideas? |

Paulie,
Could you please get in touch with our technical support by email so that we could discuss and diagnose the behavior?
It could be caused by a low number of concurrent connections and at the same time HTTP/2 clients who maintain their sessions active for a long time. So the lockup could be a simple exhaustion of your "connection" slots.
Anyway, we can't tell without some diagnosis. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

Windows 11 is Windows 7 + Eye Candy + DRM and user tracking. The kernel, networking and the Win32 API what Abyss Web Server uses has not changed since ages. So there should be no showstoppers. _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

I have just upgraded to v2.16.4 -> The bug in the installer is still there: It says that the service has been restarted, and for a brief moment you see the webserver starting in the Task Manager, and then it's gone again.
Source: service control manager
ID: 7034
The Abyss Web Server-service has closed unexcepted. That happened now once.
