I have installed php and have even read the posts on this forum about phpmyadmin. I tried the tut on trustabyss and still i cant get it to work. This is the error i am getting.

And i do have mysql installed.

Make sure you have php_mysql.dll in your ext folder.
Go into your php.ini file and uncomment the following line...
;extension=php_mysql.dll
(delete the ";" from the beginning of the line)
Save the change. |

The mbstring PHP extension was not found and you seem to be using multibyte charset. Without mbstring extension phpMyAdmin is unable to split strings correctly and it may result in unexpected results.

I have also activated the php.ini line:
extension=php_mbstring.dll
but the error remains. I've checked and the php\extensions directory contails php_mbstring.dll and other php.ini settings are
extension_dir = extensions
enable_dl = On
PhpMyAdmin says:
Language English (en-utf-8)
MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)
MySQL connection collation utf8_general_ci
I'm using phpMyAdmin 2.6.4-pl1, MySQL 4.1.14-nt, Php Version 4.2.3, Abyss Web Server X1 (v 2.0.6) - all under Windows XP SP2
Has anyone fixed this? Does it matter? Any ideas, please.

Run phpinfo() and check for the presence of mbstring.
If you get nothing with ctrl+f then check you're editing the right php.ini.

Hi MonkeyNation, thanks for the quick reply.
I ran phpinfo() and checked for the presence of mbstring and it wasn't there.
I noticed that phpinfo() was saying:
Configuration File (php.ini) Path: c:\winnt
This is strange as I have no c:\winnt - I'm on XP and the directory is C:\Windows.
I've checked and there is no config.inc.php in the C:\ drive.
I know that MyPhpAdmin is using the config.inc.php in F:\MyPhpAdmin
(my installation directory) as I had to edit this file to give the MySQL
username and password in order for MyPhpAdmin to work.
In Abyss configuration I have set up an alias for /php to F:\MyPhpAdmin
and then I execute http://localhost/php/ which starts MyPhpAdmin
and displays all my databases. I start phpinfo using http://localhost/php/phpinfo.php
Could it be that MyPhpAdmin is finding my config file but phpinfo is not?
Where next?

This does not matter. What PHP needs is to give it the location of your php.ini file. To do so, add a custom environment variable in "Scripting Parameters", call it PHPRC and set it to the full path of the directory where your php.ini file is (a similar configuration is described in http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/php5win.html .

Mind you, now have another little challenge:
"You are using PHP 4.2.3, which has a serious bug with multi-byte strings (mbstring). See PHP bug report 19404. This version of PHP is not recommended for use with phpMyAdmin."
Not to worry. I will hunt for a later version.
