I found the most coolest portable linux cd in the world , Knoppix never allowed me to
get online but when I found out about Slax , I just had to try it and it supported all
of my hardware , from now on this will be my testing server.

http://www.trustabyss.com:85/ ~ Running Linux ~

Slax Linux: http://slax.linux-live.org

Note: Will be offline from time to time , this is a live CD version of Linux. LateR!

Edit: I would move back to Linux but it would be one week of hard labor all
over again , here's some good reasons why I should stick with Windows...

I would have to resize the only partition I got , sounds dangerous.
I would have to compile a Linksys WUSB11 V2.6 Wireless Adapter.
I would have to reinstall Abyss Web Server and reconfigure it
I would have to reinstall a new Mail Server to get my mail working
I would have to reinstall Python , PHP , MySQL , Perl & phpMyAdmin

If you look at it , doing this move is not a good idea , so id rather test
Abyss Web Server on my fun Linux distribution I have now. LateR! :)

In my opinion, I wouldn't choose linux red hat is open source. And i'm just un comfortable knowing im running on an open source linux. You probably won't need to upgrade your ram (Ive seen linux running on a 64mb ram, and abyss doesn't requre much). :D

Most used doesn't necessarily mean best, or you'd be sticking with Windows under your own argument.

If you'd like to try Linux and see if it's for you, download a copy of Knoppix - it is a live CD distribution that will allow you to try out Linux without having to install anything. It boots entirely off the CD and you can have a poke around and see what you like / don't like.

http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Is your machine going to be a dedicated server - ie you will not be using it for anything else - or are you going to try and use it for web browsing / watching movies / listening to music etc ? If it is a dedicated server, you probably won't need to upgrade your RAM - just don't run any XWindows environment on your server, leave it console only and control it from your main PC.

At the moment, I'm using a Red Hat linux box to act as a proxy server and filtering solution for one of the networks I administrate, the box is a 266 PII with 256mb RAM and I've had no complaints about speed / access time. It doesn't boot to an XWindows environment, just the console prompt - all administration is done via SSH or a webbrowser interface. It's also solid as a rock, the only uptime losses I've had have been to unexpected powercuts.

root@cranky:~# uptime
11:09:05 up 42 days, 9 min, 2 users, load average: 0.72, 0.38, 0.29

Not bad for a PC that was gathering dust under a desk :D

I may leave it in the GUI mode but if I do that , can I easily put it in Server
mode after I intall everything that needs installed like Abyss Web Server ?

Note: I tried Knoppix , cool CD but I want the real thing now.

TRUSTpunk,

The configuration you have may not be fine for a modern Red Hat distribution. We recommend using another Linux distribution which can offer more installation options (and which gives you the ability to not install everything.)
Our favorite is Slackware http://www.slackware.org/ . It is known to run on small systems with no problems. But there are many other distributions that are worth trying.

I did not meet the criteria for RedHat nor Mandrake because both required either a 386 or a 586 MHZ processor and this old server PC just doesn't have enough , I found out it only has 366 MHZ and that explains why it never worked.

you'd of had fun trying to get my little old computer running linux.
its an old 486 (i think) and its only 33MHz, but i did (just about) get freebsd running on it.
if you think thats bad enough, the pc uses DIMM memory sticks, and its only got 8Mb of memory.

apart from installing redhat and then playing tux racer, i am new to linux

Gentoo Linux (www.gentoo.org) is a good distro for servers. Its good for long holiday weekends when you have lots of time. But, I succesfully run it on a laptop and an old server (both 433MhZ, AMD K6-2 processors) and know of others who ahve made it work on a lot less. It gives you the perfect choice as to what programs to install and be run as a really lean server. It also provides an excellent learning experience for how computers and operating systems work....but, a simple server that simply works would do well with Slackware.

I have a copy of Mandrake on my server and it seems to work pretty good and i love it so far... I had a copy of RedHat, but didn't care much for it. I prefer Mandrake over RedHat.
