Is there anyway i can have the server running and serving a webpage with a link that says "ring bell for service and they can click on a link (wav. or mp3)that i can hear at home on my local computer? This is for customer support (with stand alone chat application) so that i can be notified at home when someone needs help. I am aware of the live help applications out there but i think this server combined with a stand alone chat application can do a better (and lower resources) job. Just need to work it out. Any help appreciated. there is an application out there that can do it and it works but i think i can do this using this server. This application is called netchimes running php. |

Netchimes looks perfect to me and has the added bonus of having the IM already built in. Anything else you run as well as Abyss will obviously use more resources than just running Abyss plus a CGI script to make a sound. What 'stand alone chat application' were you thinking of running? If you mean an IM like ICQ/MSN etc, they already have notification sounds available when someone sends you a message...
If you just want a page that plays a WAV file or whatever on your machine, you wouldn't link to the sound file, just use a small piece of PHP script to play the sound on the server. However, it doesn't sound like you're already familiar with scripting languages - I'd stick with Netchimes... |

ok. Netchimes it will be. I am not using the IM just the sound alert. when someone enters the help web page and clicks a button(netchimes). The web page has a webcam and simple chat box in two iframes. When i turn the server on it has a blinking light so that they will know i am available and can then "ring bell" Thanx for the advise. It will be well taken. Now just a few adjustments for firefox browsers and it should be just fine. Thanx again. |
