Apologies for probably posting a repeat question, but I did a search and dcould not find the answer.

I understand that most ISPs do nor approve of people hosting their own sites on residential connections. Therefore, two questions:

1 - Are there any broadband ISPs out there that do not specifically state in their terms that web-hosting is not allowed?

and

2 - What is the cheapest way to get an internet connection that CAN be used to host a site?

thks!

read the tos agreement of your ISP, then check if port 80 is blocked.

That is not the issue - I am VERY aware of my current ISP's TOS.

I am wondering whether there are ANY ISPs that do not forbid web-serving in their TOS.

You have to look at it from this point of view, your paying them for a service, they are the service provider, so provide the service... simple as that.

I gave NTL so much shit about it in several scating emails that even I am surprised in the turn around, I stated exactly that in writing and verbally to the service department and the tech department and now I dont have a problem.

If your ISP would be prepaired to run your website with all the trimmings like CGI or PHP and a database for a forum board, then you stick it to them that you want either unlimited traffick or they give you the support you need to run all your services otherwise they dont have a leg to stand on, who are they to tell you what you can and cannot do with your connection, that are merely the carriers to the major back bones or the netrworks, your paying them loads more than they are paying for the badwidth that they have to rent, its why they are in buisness and they are taking the piss.

I make no bones about it as it is a subject close to my heart and I for onwe will never backdown from an ISP, NTL know I run server and consume lots of bandwith, I have told them that to interfer with my connection is to cintravine the contract because under UK law, even though they may put clauses in the contract, you still have the right to run services to support your website if you so wish to, no one, not even a court order can tell you to cease and desist unless the content your spewing out is of a distasteful content.

When you talk to your ISP, stick the boot in and do it hard, you have to let them know that your the paychecque at the end of the month, plenty more providers that are willing to soak up new buisness too.

3 Years ago I had no end of problems with my connection going off line and other problems, it was about the beginning of the issues to do with p2p networks, I average a fair few gigabytes per month, my all time record wah 174Gigabytes downloaded, my modem kept going off line and after a short and to the point phone call to the technical department at 3am, certainly did surprise the techs as they obviously didnt expect me to jump on them, since that night my modem has worked flawlessly. Proof enough that ISP's will do just about anything to conserve bandwidth, bandwidth which I have paid for and a perfect legal right to, you only have to sit down with a calculator and workout your maximum download in bits and as long as you dont exceed that, your OK, you paid for it, use it.

These are some of the issues that people just dont consider, the ISP is never playing fair yet they treat the customer like shit.
