I learned about this a month or so ago, and it is still in the BETA stage.
Right now, you can't just register an email account, you need to request one. They may or may not give you one.
They also may start charging money when it becomes publically available; who knows.
EDIT: And for those of you who want the link, http://gmail.google.com/ _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Probably not a total scam; because Google wouldn't do that. But it isn't everything they promise. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Google wouldnt scam but they just might have not released all teh details yet. These emails might be reserved to people that sign up with their services or something like that. It will be ok by me if it comes out not wat its cracked up to be, I have my own SMTP server so I can have as much space as I. Its totaly free, no advertisements unlike google, my own personalised junk mail filters an d online interface. Best of all it was completely free...thanks to P2P and a little scripting that it LOL! All the emails dont even go into my hard drive, they go into a remote secured server, every email is encrypted and completely anonymous thanks to some dark-tips and proxies. I might be making my emails publicly available soon but for now they are just for me and my friends.
The only think i had to pay for was a domain to be @ but there is shlightly more complicated and harder to manage free solutions. |

I trust google,
if the goverment wanted to track you it would be easier to get it from your isp rather than go through googles 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 gigabytes of raw data |

Taken From: http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2004/04/13/gmail_the_good_the_bad_and_the_ugly.html
Uneditted, uncensored.
"On a technical level, Google is not doing anything more than any other free-mail site. They are searching through your email for keywords using automated robots only; spam filters on Hotmail and Yahoo do the same thing. The difference is what they do with that information. While spam filters just move your messages to a different directory, Google calculates a metric in which to automatically present you with ads. (For those who haven't seen the ads, unlike banner ads, they're uber small and so not invasive; in fact, i couldn't find them at first.) By default, the ads are given to you and assuming you ignore them, the client knows nothing about you. If you click, it's your prerogative and i still haven't figured out what all ends up being sent. But Master Heer is correct - the cookies shit that Hotmail/Yahoo leave behind are *far* more invasive and you can't get out of them simply by not clicking.
So, on a technical level, i don't think that poorly of G-Mail. Then, there is the social level. Once again, Google has made me smack my hand to my forehead and scream up, praying to the goddesses to send them a few socially-minded people."
Note: This is just a bit of it, read the rest before you post an arguement with me. _________________ Thank you all. Aprelium most importantly.

Don't worry, I don't plan to argue with you.
I guess the whole idea here is about the advertising. It is pretty wrong that Google would search through your email and pick out words that trigger advertisments, but then again, that's what they do with your search results. That's basically what you contract for: 1GB of space, targeted advertisments; which is why I host all my own services; to have complete control.
Wouldn't it be ironic if, in the phrase "I hate flowers," the robot picked up the word "flowers" and therefore gave you targeted advertisments about flowers? _________________ Bienvenidos! |

BLOCK COOKIES!! srry i had to say that. Why are you worrying so much about your privacy. YOu are all too paranoid.... And me too... Thats why I have the solution of all our problems. A little program to make your internet connection go through about 12 anonymous proxies(i think 12, but it is customizable) before reaching a destination host requested by your computer. If you are even more paranoid my suggestion is get a packet sniffer. Sniff out all the packets traveling through your netowrk and look at them. If you have a internet security soft package most likely it will have a while bunch of privacy softs. I know that Mcafee internet security 5 has this thing that enncrypts and monitors all my personal files (this might be interesting for all yoy that wans to protect EVERy single word document that has your name on it. You can encrypt and monitor your credit card info(not that you woluld be so stupid as to use your credit card over the internet). There is more,, mcafee internet security 5 also has a little shreder program that will shred a file over as many times as you want, it even has government security levels or so they claim. My personal program to prtect my stuff is PGP. Encrypt anything, encrypt and zip, encrypt and sign, encrypt and password protect, evem turn into self ectracting zip files.
If you want even more security feel free to email me at my email(this is my non secured on i use for signing up on stuff) respect_my_authoritay@msn.com. I will be happy to help you with your paranoid needs because as we all know THEY ARE GOING TO GET US!!! |

Ok, now calm down...
First of all, cookies can be a good thing. You just need to block the bad ones. Remember, you need cookies to post on this forum!
Second, you don't need 12 proxy servers. 1 will do just as good. If you want, get Anonymizer.
For encrypting your files, PGP will do the trick (like you said). I actually installed PGP and it corrupted my operating system which resulted in a format; but that's just me.
A network sniffer (such as Ethereal) can monitor traffic on your network, but that won't help you much. And besides, most people don't know how to interpret packets.
Here's an image I made a while back: (Note, there are 2 cookies; not one big deformed one): http://www.cfxnetworks.com/inanimate/media/image/trackingcookie.gif
Also, watch the show Conspiracies on TechTV; you might like it! :D _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Cookies are required on this forum. When you go to a page, the cookie tells phpBB that you have already logged in. Same as when you post.
Bad cookies are cookies that track what you do, send information back to the company, et cetera. Good cookies are the ones who serve a necessary technological purpose, such as the cookies on this forum, the cookies that remember the information you add to your shopping cart when you shop online, the cookies that keep username and password information, and others like that. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

I've tested the blocking feature they offer, and I must say, it is crap. Stick with the free version. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Gmail won't do anything different than what spam filters have been doing for years. It will all be done by computer. |

Essentially, you're right. However, Google's robots go deeper into your email than Spam Filters. Also, Spam Filters are there to help you; as Google is not.
It is just the first step to AI. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

They dont give you 1Gig, you space is allocated as and when needed by the system so that they dont have to invest in highcapacity storage and hardware. They will have many machine with the latest hard drives and set up as a RAID to give redundancy to the networks data and your emails... |
