You have to hire a service to buy the domain name but you can set up a free dns server:

A Real TLD (Top Level Domain, such as .com, .net, and .org) - Let me first say, there is absolutely NO WAY to get a free TLD. Whatever the deal, you will eventually have to open your wallet.
There are many providers to choose from. I like to use 000domains.com. For $13.50 per year, they offer every service you will ever need.

The majority of companies whom sell TLDs to not offer DNS services (ways to associate your domain with your IP address). For this, I reccomend a free service called "ZoneEdit." To use this, you must associate your domain with ZoneEdit's namesevers. They show you how to do that on their website, www.zoneedit.com. For those of you who have dynamic IPs, there is a list of 3rd-party applications in their FAQ.

I apologize if I sound rude, but there is a way, or else no one would have a website, because they would all buy each others services to get domain names, and that is obviously not logical. I appreciate your quick response, though.

If anyone can help me out with this or prove me wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

Look through this:

Make sure you look at this:

Everyone who has a domain name has had to register that domain name to get it - in other words, use a service. The only people who can register domain names are registrars, you pay the registrar to register the domain name in your name. They are all buying each others services - either working as a reseller and registering the domain names with a different registrar when you pay them, or working as a registrar themselves and handling registration directly. You will not get a .com/.net/.org address without paying, as has already been stated.

(nquin321: that first post you made sounds exactly like one I would have made :D )

You all seem to be missing something here. The .com registry is managed by VeriSign, inc. You need to talk to THEM, not ICANN, to become a registrar. And it is a 4-step process; not a 37 page document (which I feel is a relief),

http://www.verisign.com/nds/naming/registrar/dotcom/step1.html
Note: The process is not free.

Surety Instrument
The Surety Instrument is a financial guarantee that would be employed by the Registry if faced with a third party claim in which the Registrar did not indemnify VeriSign as required by the RRAs. The Surety Instrument must be for the amount of One Hundred Thousand US Dollars ($100,000). For additional information on the surety instrument, please see Paragraphs 2.13 and 6.16 of the Registry-Registrar Agreements.

Acceptable vehicles to satisfy the surety instrument are:
Cash Deposit;
Irrevocable Standby Letter of Credit from a bank;
Performance Bond from an approved surety or bank. *or
Insurance policy providing at least One Hundred Thousand Dollars (US $100,000) in coverage and referencing VeriSign, Inc. as an additional insured; ** or

If you already have a comprehensive general liability insurance policy in the amount of One Million Dollars (US $1,000,000), such as one you may already have in place to meet the requirements for ICANN or one of the other gTLD registries, VGRS will consider this requirement met by adding VeriSign, Inc. as an additional insured.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D I would go with the service :lol: :lol: :lol:

Folks you do know Versign has many law suites against them because there attempting to replace the 404 error pages with their ads. Why do we allow companies to rob us blind. I don't agree with how above mentioned is handled-it should be goverment regulating these people. It seems from reading the above the Internet can replace Gov. regulation throuh savvy technology.

Again I solute Aprelium for freedom.

True, that is pretty bad. The thing is, the Government doesn't come up with this new technology; companies do. So the government will have to get some really good lawyers on their side to figure out how to regulate the technology; or else it will remain private property of the person/company who created it.

LOL @ the tone (or ignorance) of the thread starter..... (esp. his reply!!) Sorry, it made me laugh

You have to "rent the domainname" so long as its available + some providers also charge for the DNS side of things (I have just gone through all of this.) May I recommend http://australianwebsites.com/
Yes, it is an Australian website (and no, Im not affiliated with them) but they are offering .com and .net and .org addresses for AUS$17/year which must be about US$10......this is a very good deal in my book.............

Well considering VeriSign technically "owns" all the Domains (because they manage the entire list), I guess you could call it "renting."

The yearly payment is your mortgage payment, so before you know it, your domain name turns into your own virtual house!

Well there are backup lists in case of emergencies, so I don't think you have to worry too much about the whole domain name system going down. If VeriSign were to go on strike, the lists would most likely still be maintained by others.
