Today the Web server started something very strange.a smalldos window pops up and vanishes every twelve seconds or so... SEE THERE IS GOES AGAIN!!! hahaha

But seriously, have been running Abyss Web Server X1 (v 1.2.2.2) on Win98SE For the last couple of months with no Issues. Made a virual path recently... but that has been working for a couple of days with no problems.

what else whould I be looking for as the root of this problem.

Since Windows 98 does not support the use of "services," a little black box (DOS Window) pops up every time a PHP. CGI, or ASP script is executed. This is the interpreter coming up and resolving the code for Abyss.

Of course there are also other things that can cause this, but when I used to run Abyss on a Windows 98 machine, the same thing would happen to me every time I executed a PHP or CGI script.

I found a user in my access log that was going thru an old batch of dos files on my index and xecuting them. They were trying to run on my computer, but were small executions inside of a bigger program, said browser never executed the "main" program, nor was right clicking and "Saving as".

EVERYONE REMEMBER to not store information you want kept secure in your root directory!!!

Abyss access log provided me with the ip address of the offender and I notified their isp of the violation.... then proceeded to ping the said address at such a rate that caused them to be disconnected.

Careful. I do not advise lashing back at him with a DoS attack. From a legal stand point, your now in just as much trouble as he is for going through your files, if not more. There is no simple way to explain why you did that to him. DoS attacks are not legal. No exceptions to that rule. He was just 'exploring' your root directory. If you leave scripts, files, ect that you don't want run in your root directory its your own fault.

Good... I hope he feels as violated as I do. But I will take under advisement your suggestion.

I was at fault... I pointed out to others not to make my mistake. But no one is allowed to "Execute" programs on my computer. If anything he was "Permitted" to download those files... not execute them on my computer.

I also took the liberty of masking my ip for the ping trace I did to track and overload his/her connection. At least when I was done all they had to do was log back into the internet. They were systematicly going thru files I had downloaded for work to burn a back up cd... and was running late and forgot to delete them. Never occured to me someone would Execute a file they did not know what it was. Or even take anything that they did not know what it was for.

But my lesson has been learned and wanted to share this... I am certain commonly known and commonly overlooked knowledge.
