How can I use a domain name or something in place of that IP, and can I give myself FTP access? Or can I have my boards and stuff on it without ftp? |

When you buy a domain you can have it point to your IP address. The rest good questions I have no clue. _________________ Picture of my a$$ coming soon till than look at this ( ( ) <== NICE A$$! |

There are a number of free providers of permenant hostnames without having to buy your own domain name. Two examples are
http://www.no-ip.com/
http://www.dyndns.org/
If you create an account with them you can use (for example) knives.ath.cx for free as long as no one has registered that already (quite likely for the name knives). You download a small piece of software to run automatically and update the IP they hold in their database for your server. Anyone can now type http://knives.ath.cx and get to your site without having to remember an IP address.
Abyss doesn't include an FTP server so if you want FTP access you'll have to get a daemon from elsewhere. If you're setting up the boards on your own machine locally you shouldn't need ftp access, you can just put the files where you need them.

I'd just go to GoDaddy.com and buy a domain for $20 for 3yrs.
Then go to ZoneEdit.com and get free DNS service for up to 5 domains.
You'll just add ZoneEdit's DNS records to your GoDaddy account and point ZoneEdit to your IP address.
Pretty simple...
As far at FTP, I think there's been ftp software mentioned within tese forums...do a search.

Well people can't access my IP because my dad doesn';t want hackers to see our IP, like they can't anyway
But if I used a domain name would they be able to? |

Anyone can get your IP from the domain name. It isn't a secret.
Open for example a DOS box and type there:
Press Enter and you'll see what is our IP and the path from our server to your computer. _________________ Support Team

If you don't want people to see your IP address...don't run a web server (have someone else host it)...
You're best bet is to get a broadband router with a hardware firewall, and for greater protection add in a software one like ZoneAlarm or some other freebie.
Always keep your OS up-to-date and run an antivirus package ( I use AVG from grisoft.com --- free). _________________ ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

well normaly a hacker would go for some thing big like (verisign whos getting sued by godaddy 8) )but thewn they no they well get fined or sent to jail. unless you have a really big popular site then you might get hacked (like my good firend os17fan's site offspringvideos.com that gets hack attemps allot but he pretechs his computer by using norton internet security) if all else fails use godaddy hotsing it has almost everything you need and its really cheap. :) |

dyndns.org is a great service, I'd even recommend it to my granny ;)
Waht also a possibility is (wehn you have a static IP) get yourself a free referral @ www.dot.tk (including banner wich can be turned OFF (free!!!))
There are programs to ensure that your pc cannot be pinged from a certain ip-range.
I haven't heard about standalone versions, but that function is included in wingate(routing/proxy software including firewall).
And for a free ftp-server check www.pablovandermeer.nl
Hope this will gett you started
