I think I'm better understanding this crazy thing, but still am running into problems. Here are the latest developments:
A...Getting my website exposed on the internet.
If my ip is http://68.115.3.14, then what URL do I provide my clients and others to see my website? I've already tried the above ip with some of my clients, but they end up with a 404 error. This is perhaps the most confusing thing! :?
B...All my website files are in the htdocs folder.
Is there yet another place I need to upload them too, because in "Access Control" it does not list any files I've uploaded.
These are the only real pressing issues at the moment, so I ask for whatever help you can provide me here. Thanks again!
Randy :D

your ip points dirctly to your htdocs folder, and that is the place you upload all of your files. Http://68.115.3.14/index.html will open c:\abyss\htdocs\index.html or your equivalent. |

Okay then bluedog, I need you to confirm something. If all my files are in the htdocs folder, which they are, then I tell those who want to view my website to use "http://68.115.3.14/index.html" to get to my site.
Correct or incorrect? |

go to security metrics http://securitymetrics.com and make sure port 80 is not closed or stealth... If it is you have to tell your firewalls to give port 80 permission... If your ISP is blocking port 80 and it is uncontrollable on your end simply change the port and add it to the end of your IP address "http://0.0.0.0:8000" (8000 is a port number you can use).
If you have to change your port number make sure if your on XP to open up that port with your firewall...
Good luck :) |

Okay, I am using a firewall, and when I keep it off, then port 80 is not blocked, but is when it's on. I use Sygate Personal firewall, but do not know how to program it to allow port 80. And I cannot run a website without a firewall, can i? :?
Perhaps you can refer me to another free firewall which will allow this! Please help since I need to get my website up ASAP!

I used sygate (untill my computer got a virus and I had to reformat) and It should've prompted you to allow *program* to act as a server -OR- *program* is trying to connect to 0.0.0.0:80 or something. You should have allowed it... there is a way to allow but I don't know howto explain it over the internet. Good Luck with your problem though! |

datwig: The firewall never told me anything when I have the server on. Perhaps I should just find a free host somewhere.  |

I use two firewalls... Not a problem in speed and or etc... Did you go to http://securitymetrics.com and see if port 80 is being blocked? If it is but you disabled all of your firewalls and it shouldn't don't fret about it... Chances are your ISP is blocking port 80 for you... Simply change the port under server configuration and *not* under console configuration... Then add the port onto the end of your IP address...
Make sure if your on XP to remember XP has its own firewall and you would have to go into it to add the new server port...
Good luck |

vbgunz: yes I did check and port 80 is stealthed. So now I'm screwed again because no-one will see my website.
I cannot for the life of me figure out why this is so complicated for me! I mean you all figured it out, so why can't I? I want to learn and understand it, that's for sure, but just when I think I've made it over another hump, something else happens. :x
Please don't think I'm just complaining and whining here, but this is really flustrating me! Any takers? |

Eaglefox,
Open SPF and go to:
TOOLS>ADVANCED RULES
Then click ADD...type in a name for the rule. (anything)
Select ALLOW THIS TRAFFIC.
Choose interface card.
In Hosts tab...select ALL ADDRESSES.
In Ports and Protocols tab...select TCP as the protocol...80 as the local.
(Leave remote blank)
Select INCOMING as the traffic direction.
Click OK and your done.
Hope this helps. |
