i am hoping to eventually give up xp and just run linux

until recently both servers working fine
however recently the linux box has been behaving eratically when running in linux (there are no probs in xp)

basically when the server is running i can log in to a web page
i can click on all links with html, ppt, doc extensions but if i open a link to a directory will not open, all other links will still work

the error message i get is
 error 64
but this is behind business firewall/gateway/proxy
but still happens if at home on same network

 any ideas

				| In my opinion:
You should stick with XP...I don't see any benefit of using Linux (except that you can wear penguin shirts), but I see many issues with doing so. If you're used to Windows, you may consider staying with Windows.

Switching to a different OS is risky, but even risky-er if you're putting the systems safety up against a network of malicious users (internet)...You may not have everything configured as tightly as you can with XP...Plus, Linuxes list of programs are laFFable, IMO.

Which application is outputting this error code, because as far as I know there is no HTTP status code 64. Which indicates another application on the Linux OS is prevented the request from being completed.

It really depends on what you need the computer to do for you, I agree that there aren't many games out for Linux, but every other application type is well catered for within the Linux environment.

What are the differences between the XP setup and the Linux setup? Are the same files served from a shared FAT of NTFS filesystem? Or did you copy the files to an ext2 or ext3 system? If the latter, check the permissions. I don't know what user the Abyss runs as on your system, but that user needs read- and execute rights on the directories, and read permissions on the files.

I do not quite understand what you mean. Anyway, HTTP status codes have higher numbers, so this is not an HTTP error. Can you tell us what fails and how? Is it the server or a scripting language? does the message show on the command line, in a log or in the browser? Are the CGI logs enabled?

PS. I'm running Xubuntu (with the Abyss) for more than two years now.
