I use Abyss with the preconfigured php/gd and run PHP Fusion and Coppermine Photogallery along with my own ftp server and mail server.
I've been using Abyss for a long time and never had any problems.
If I did run into the occasional glitch, the help here on this forum and the tutorials have been excellent!
Keep up the great work!!
