I have a question on graphics design. I recently searched Google about colors in web design and found some pretty interesting information. I came across a website that explained colors in web design, but I forgot the site address. I was wondering if any of you use "Color Theory", and the "Color Wheel" to design your website graphics? The reason why I ask is because the website claims that if you follow the rules on color theory and the color wheel, your website colors will fit perfectly. Can any of you recommend a book that can teach me how to match colors? I have poor skills in graphics design. :-(

Thanks for any help on this. I apologize for not bookmarking this website (Hint: it looked like it had circus colors).

Kind regards, Josh

Hi Josh,

The best thing to do when using a color wheel is to match opposite colors. Opposite colors on the color wheel always go together well.

Also, when it comes to making a template, try to only pick 3 or at most 4 colors for the template. For example AbyssUnderground uses 4, Black, White, Blue and Orange. Choosing too many colors can make things look messy. Also make sure the colors compliment each other. My Blue and Orange do go well together so its not a problem.

On this color wheel you can see that blue and orange do go well together as they are fairly opposite each other. White and Black are not included on the wheel because they fit with all colors anyway.

Hope this helps. Come on MSN if you have any questions about it :-)

Thanks for the tips Andy. I'm horrible with site design colors as well.
I just chanced upon this site the other day: http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html
It generates random colors for you to use, and it uses the wheel method. It's great for us design-challenged people.

Several examples of schemes here: http://www.colorschemer.com/schemes/

http://steplivelynow.com/blog/a-simple-trick-to-take-the-agony-out-of-creating-color-schemes/7/ gives a tip regarding how to select 4 or 5 colors that form a coherent color scheme.

A site I've been using for a couple of years now...
www.colorsontheweb.com
It has some generators to get a good color scheme.

Sorry to bring this back up; I was wondering if there's an ebook out there that focuses only on the design part of creating a website. I've looked at the ebook "The Principles of Beautiful Web Design" and it didn't really teach me anything. The book is clearly horrible because it doesn't teach, it only makes you look stupid. The author of that book shows work of him and his friends. He never gave any real examples on how to build from those ideas that he mentions in the book. So, out of respect, is there any book out there that focuses on the TRUE beginner design principles with colorful examples?

Here's the stuff that I'm hoping to learn.

- Gathering info about a site
- Rules of Thirds (Creating a layout)
- Color (Everything!)
- Font (How to select the best font possible)
- and a whole lot more!

If any one has a proper ebook that teaches the Newb graphics designer how to truly create beautiful web sites with the proper layout and color techniques, please let me know. I know that there's tricks of the trade to web design and I want to find out about it.

let me respect your post.
well! you have asked wonderful question.
yes all these thing do matter a lot.
this is all related to branding.
you should type perception web design in google.
you can see the logo of coca cola it is in red color.
red color shows excitement.
blue color is more like by women. and test of pepsi is sweeter. and pepsi is more liked by women.

so you explore more on perception and type human personality and color in google you will have more insights...
