set up mailsend

Hi, im trying to get a program script i attained to send private emails. Or for example a chat room which supprts private mailing to and from each of the chatters. (for example)

I have also attained indigo mail. A windows version of mailsend. I have a bt account but would like to have my own smtp mail server.

Could anyone give me a clue as to how to get such a setup, up and running through abyss webserver. Some questions include (ascertained from my browsing other people with mail send problems):

Do i need a mail serever. (Which One???)

How do i set it up etc.

If you can help id be very grateful.

I have had a go but the last error was this one:

Warning: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 550 <sjh1964@btinternet.com>... Not permitted in L:\abyss\htdocs\myclassifieds2\funcs2.php on line 246


ive alos had mothers requiring authentication. Dont know wether to set up as BT or own server.
