Is the Abyss our solution to design and test our websites off line on both mac and windows platforms? We could load the system on an old G4, 450Mhz and dedicate this as our main server plugged into our LAN.

Would appreciate hearing people's advise/experience..

W

Sites will be using CMS and need to have absolute links.. (/path/index.html)

Abyss is able to run on Mac, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD so it would be the perfect solution to testing your website and CMS. Please feel free to ask any questions if you have problems.

MAMP? Im taking it this is an Apache package like LAMP and WAMP.

MAMP/LAMP/WAMP is a package that comes with everything installed and working. This gives you less flexibility than using Abyss with everything installed manually. Its difficult to upgrade a MAMP installation without upgrading the whole thing if Im not mistaken. With Abyss you can update individual scripting languages, databases etc without touching anything else.

Although Apache is more powerful, Abyss is easier to use and has better support if you can't figure something out. My website also offers tutorials on installing just about anything you would want to on Abyss in terms of scripting languages and databases is concerned.

a quick search revealed that mamp stands for mac, apache, mysql and php. i understand that nobody makes mamp where it would be mac, abyss, mysql and php :-P but if you want it the latter way, you would have to install mysql and php manually yourself.

php and mysql are fairly easy to install by themselves, just follow their guides - although i wouldn't know how complex that would be in a mac environment. add abyss and you're there already! plus you probably can squeeze more juice out of your custom installation than just by going with the original mamp. arguably, mamps, lamps and wamps really made it simple for people to use apache - somewhat beating abyss on where it should dominate - the ease of installation/configuration game. i guess it would be a NICE idea too if aprelium considered such packaging styles also. hmm, or we would need third-party advocates for such moves here...

The major problem with ?AMPs (MAMP/WAMP/LAMP) is that the ease of use is only for the first 5 minutes. But they do not offer anything to make configuration easy or at least more "understandable" to novice or normal users. When you'd like to setup something specific on your ?AMP installation, you'll find it easier to resinstall every tool on your own and ditch the original package.
