Truth is, their is no such thing as a stupid question...

This is in no way meant to offend anyone nor is it in anyway meant to be the smack down of rules... Let me begin...

People, get your priorities straight before you ask your question/s... It is appalling and just flat out disgusting to see a new question that common sense, the manual, these boards have already answered...

People, got a question don't say it doesn't work, curse in stupidity or even think about making a threat of some sort because it'll not only reveal who you are but prove how *ignorant* a person can really be... Don't do it... Don't prove it...

People, got a question? Outsource your resources... Hit the manual, use common sense and then search these boards... Of course the answer might be hidden within all three but search the net! Then when you're done come back and don't just state it doesn't work... no one wants to hear that... no one needs to hear that... Tell us what you did to try and solve the problem, tell us everything you tried so we don't tell you to do it all over again... no one needs to waste their energy in trying to help you...

People, Besides telling us all that you tried please tell us your OS, firewall if any and any other servers you might be running (ftp, smtp, etc)... Try your best to lay down what your setup is like... If you're on XP you'll most likely get others with XP to answer your question (though any OS owner might know the answer)...

People, you got your problem solved but already asked the question on the boards? Come back and tell us you got it solved... Thank the person who answered you and tell them and the rest of us it was their answer which saved the day... No one answered you correctly but you solved the problem? Please tell us you solved it and what it was that you did to solve the problem...

99% of the problems people are having with Abyss isn't even because of Abyss but is because of the lack of self knowledge in their setups & a majority of the questions asked are because of the lack of self confidence to try and do something about it all on thier own...

Think about this scenario for just a second... A Chef pours his heart out into a plate of food and you're a bum with no home... Chances are today you'll go hungry without a meal... Are you really going to bite the chefs hand off or curse him out because the food is not to your taste?

Most probably know better than we do that beggers should not be choosers and though no one is saying anyone is begging anyone can of course go out and get a job and pay for their own meal...

Most questions and comments are exactly that but in disguise... Just think about your questions before you ask them...

People, Some questions might sound dumb or ignorant based but even worst are some of the answers some of you are coming up with... Ever heard of aint got something nice to say don't say anything at all? Don't throw it out the window here... Not here... Treat and answer someone the way you wish to be treated and answered...

The worst isn't someone who ask but someone who says nothing or worst... someone who says something stupid...

Theirs much more about it but please start with the above... Have fun :)

You've got it all wrong... You didn't read the body of my message, you only read the subject huh... First off right off the top I said no offense to anyone... Not everything in life is free...

Its real ugly when I see a question that I know is already ansered in the manual... Its uglier when it could be answered using common sense... It's at it ugliest when for a fact you know someone just didn't do their homework and it is flat out outrageous to read "it just doesn't work".

The kind of person to ask a question to which their is already an answer in the manual and on the boards and maybe even using common sense; to ask it doesn't work, tell me what to do, is ridiculous...

Worst is the comments and stupid answers that bump the topic to the top... Worst is once the question is answered the one asking the question doesn't even step in to say it's solved - wasting the time and energies of others who are willing to help others who truly need it...

My point is do your homework before you say it doesn't work... If you did your homework tell us what you did and what your OS set up is like... Don't just say it doesn't work and don't leave us in the dark when you've got it answered...

I am willingly to bet if people did their homework, half and maybe more of the questions that are asked on this board wouldn't even be brought up... It would certainly get the questions that are truly worth troubleshooting answered quicker...

Aprelium is nice enough to release Abyss as free software for the time being and Aprelium as I understand will soon either begin to charge for it or will simply also release a paid version...

My underlying point is that though Abyss is free because you can nab the software and take it home doesn't really mean its free if people are so willing, ready and able to ask unresearched questions most of the time... The kind of questions most of you ask reveal the target market Abyss is attracting... Did you know that software companies usually increase the price of their software depending on the complexity of technical support cost?

I can't get into it all but all I ask is do your home work and if you can't get it answered comeback and reveal the full analasys... Once your problem is solved state it as so...

Have fun :)

I'm with vbgunz. Some questions are asked repeatedly, if users read the forum or at least tried a search before posting it would make life a lot easier for people like aprelium. :D

Who appointed you as the spokesperson for this forum, vbgunz???

Most other good forums I visit make Step-by-Step Tutorials "sticky" at the top of the forums so people can read the full instructions. Doing that might cut down on the so-called "stupid questions", as you put it.

This forum could use a few more moderators to handle the organization of information, because as it stands - it's all over the place, and not really that organized, IMHO.

There's also a lot of questions in the General Questions forum that deserve a forum of their own, IMHO.

I understand your frustration at repeated questions, or questions you perceive as "stupid", but you should insult peoples intelligence like that. It's just not professional. Also, don't just complain about a problem - try to come up with some reasonable solutions.

No one has appointed me as anything and this forum here we participate in I give my all whenever theirs free time...

Lets get something straight before anyone else makes a reply... Read the message and step back from it... It is in no way meant to offend anyone!

In the subject line it might have said "you people ask stupid questions" but the very first line in the body states "Truth is, their is no such thing as a stupid question..." Its known pretty much how the average users attention span works... and the subject line stands out like that cause it's know it'll get more clicks than it should...

While others see this forum as a place to ask questions some see it as a place to answer them... When someone ask a question like "Abyss doesn't work, what do I do" it does the entire community no good...

Do you have any idea how many times a question is flagged that has already been answered in the manual? What in the world... Can't read the manual but can read a fish on the board??? The person doesn't want to learn how to fish they just greedy and want fish.. They want someone to just give it to them... Someone like that "DOES THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY NO GOOD"

Why should we help that person if that person cannot help themselves? Why should they waste anyones time because they wish to waste their own time? No offense but the same amount of energy that goes into typing and clicking and asking questions on the boards could be the same or lesser amount if simply searching for the answer...

The point of the post is if you have a question just try to lay it out as simple as possible, state your setup, state all that you tried... Just read "THIS" post and don't get offended.

As to why it's decided to put a sticky on the poll... We'll it goes to show it wasn't known it would make the poll stay on top of the message board... It was thought to simply change the icon to it... But its better than asking something like "whats your favorite mp3... or are you male or female..."...

The point to the poll is simple... Just wanted to see how many of the people involved with this community are either new or old to serving with any web server... It shows a little of where this entire community stands as a whole...

The reasons can be extensive but thats the short of it and after seeing for the first time what sticky does it might not be used again unless for a tutorial :)

Bottom line about this topic is problems are inevitable and no one expects for every problem to just be solved... research and outsource your resources before you ask... State what you tried, it helps us to see your process of elimination and if you solved it "state it as so"...

Also answers like "you dont speak good english and sorry I cant help you" are not answers and should not even be thought up...

It helps to let us at least know if you're on Windows or on a *nix system...

No one is smarter than anyone on these boards and who knows I am probably the least knowledgable but I really like to solve a hard question rather than "it just doesn't work..." or "how do I turn on my PC?"

... I'll wait for an answer or for another reply :)

Its all good, I love you people ;)

I also have to agree with vbgunz, after reading and answering some questions on this forum, I have also come to the conclusion that SOME people don't care to read instruction manuals and I agree "there is no stupid questions" IF... that question is about a variable not clearly documented in the manual or not about basic understanding of inernet protocols.
I therefore don't see the point in answering those questions. We all have to learn and we all have various degrees of knowledge but some do indeed ask stupid questions.

If you want to know how some of these questions look to some of us, then imagine that running a web server is a little bit like running a restaurant. So you go and get yourself a restaurant put an "Open for business" sign on the door then, you start calling other restaurant owners to ask questions like: So, anyway, how DO YOU make a hamburger?.. and what exactly IS mustard? Well if your knowledge of cooking is at this level do you really want to be running a restaurant or should you not be learning the basic in cooking first? :?
