I picked up a Linux book today and am learning. I know virtually nothing about Linux.
I'm considering switching my server computer over to Linux, but there is one big obstacle that I want to clear.
I have a Windows PC from which I do most work for my site. It's on a workgroup (for LAN file and printer sharing) with XP home edition. I want the Linux computer to act as if it were a Windows computer to share files with on my LAN.
I have read a little about Samba and it seems you have to have a domain set up to read/write files to the Linux hard drive(s).
Here's my question. Can the Linux computer be on my Windows workgroup (without setting up a Windows domain)?
Thanks for your help. _________________ Stephen

Your question is about Samba (which exists on many operating systems, not only Linux).
The short answer is "Yes": Samba can be configured to act as a file server without having a domain controller. You'll have to configure it using the same workgroup name as the one used on other Windows computers you own.
http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/sambaserver.shtml gives the instructions on how to setup such a file sharing. _________________ Support Team
