I don't think there is a limit unless you change it in the control panel (I think 20 simultaneous connections is default)
It depends on you sever and the connection

The number of simultaneous connections hasn't a direct relation with the number of physical users really browsing your site. It means that at a given instant, the server can handle up to 20 requests. But 1000 users can be visting your site at the same time, simply, not all of them are requesting images and pages at the same moment (they download a page, then read it, then click on a link to download another. Between the two downloads, the server can handle other requests.)
So you don't have really to worry about that parameter, you can leave it at its default and that won't affect your site reachability, unless you're hosting yahoo.com with more than 100000 vistors per day :D

I've had abyss crash a lot on me (only because the computer was really slow(250mhz) and I was running 10+ programes)

For me, any windows 9x it will cause a bsod, on windows xp it will do the equivilent of a bsod only instead of the blue screen of death it kind of like the pop-up of death. With the same information.

It ok. Its not a problem with abyss (I'm using the latest version)
Its the program we run at work which causes the program (dos based  )
But I removed it because I didn't need it on that computer anymore and it works fine
