|
|
Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion Laptop, which has all of my (the past 2 years) school coursework on it. Now when ever i switch it on it comes up with a BSOD, saying "Bad_system_config" I have not changed any system settings in the past couple of months, and i have no recent backup.
I have tried safe mode, is there anything i can do. _________________ My online Portfolio |

Use your XP disk and go over the copy you have. When you put the disk in it will ask if you want to repair it (not by pressing "r" thats different) you just install as you would normally install windows and it will go over system files and repair windows. Then you can get your files off, and reinstall if necessary. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Some programs may not work after the repair since windows overwrites all system files that may have been modified, but your work should be unharmed. Maybe this will teach you to make regular backups of your work too. I learned the hard way with my first website when the partition tables were deleted and I didnt know how to repair it. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

i dont think opening it in safe mode will work, to my knowledge all that does is make the user start ALL non windows programs manually (it stops viruses from running so you can kill them :D (i had to once bac when i had no idead what a virus was :/)) _________________ Where have i been? when i switch the pc on now, it comes up with a message
winlogon.exe
this application could not start, reinstalling the application my resolve this issue..
EDIT :: I do keep backups, just not regular ones.... I will learn
EDIT :: It wont let me repair it via the windows xp disc, it gives the mesasge
Quote: | Windows xp cannot reconise the partition you selected
Setup can not install Windows XP on this partition, How ever you can go back to the previous screen, delete the partition, and then select the resulting unpartitioned space.
Setup will then create a new partition on which you can install windows XP. |

Without winlogon.exe you cannot log on. So you will have to find out how to reinstall it. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Have you got a Linux Live-CD hanging around somewhere?
boot you laptop with the live-cd when it has finished loading, the hard drive should be automatically mounted.
I'll leave the rest up to you.
If your router is setup as a dhcp server then on boot up it should beable to get an ip address.
If you have a wireless network, it should be set up, if you only have a wired network, make sure the laptop is plugged in before booting up.
That way you should be able to get your files off the harddrive before you reformat it. _________________ Anthony R

What distro did you try? I've saved my work on my college laptop (IBM ThinkPad T43) a lot of times using Ubuntu and Simply Mepis. |

You can run a limited XP environment called WinPE. This program is called BartPE. You can have network access, internet access... when using this program. It loads entirely off a CD and has many plugins (Nero, File recovery tools, ...).

A little after-the-fact now, but good for future reference. :) _________________ Stephen
