Here's my issue.

First of all, i had EVERYTHING working 2 days ago. Port Forwarding/Routing, everyone could access my server.

NOW, no-one can access my server.
I have looked into it as much as I knew how. I think i've narrowed the problem down somewhat, i just need help from there.

My Network is set up as following..

2 Home PC's are connected to a Linksys Router via DHCP at 192.169.0.100
Server PC = 192.168.0.102
Other PC = 192.168.0.101

The Linksys router is then connected to a Sprint DSL Router IP(gateway) = 192.168.2.1
Linksys router IP = 192.168.2.2

DSL router forwards port 80 to 192.168.2.2 (LinkSys)
Linksys forwards port 80 to 192.168.0.102 (server)

Here's what i've figured out so far:

I CANNOT connect to the server via my external IP
I CANNOT connect to the server via my external IP over Proxy (I was able to do this before)
I CAN connect to my router configuration via my external IP.
I CAN connect to the server via 127.0.0.1 & 192.168.0.102 from the server PC (192.168.0.102)
I CANNOT connect from my second pc (192.168.0.101)

This makes me think it has something to do with my LinkSys router vs. my DSL router because it wont connect through my internal network either.

I have checked my Portforwarding several times to make sure its right.

One other thing i have noticed. The LinkSys routers DHCP Client Table does NOT show 192.168.0.102 (server)

I still have a connection to the internet though, so im not sure whats going on there.

I also have a ZoneAlarm Firewall, but i dont see this as a problem because I have tried several times with the firewall completely off. It also worked fine with the firewall on Medium settings before.

If someone is able to help or has had the same problem, i think i've given plenty of info on my setup and what i know, so if you read this you're pretty much on the same level as i am.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm gonna try to help you with this the best i can so bare with me. on the tech crap i may put in here.

Key thing to dsl is inless your isp provides you with a static ip. you have an ever changing ip address if this is the case.

If you have turn off your computer sense the last time it worked then your ip has changed. and you need to have your dsl modem point to the router and the router to the new ip address.

This is assuming that you dont have a domain yet still non the less your ip and gateway ips need to resolve its self to the localhost. (YOUR COMPUTER)

when you type in http://localhost or 127.0.0.1 does your site or abyss power page show if so then abyss config is ok.

and you need to check your ips and port forwarding as well just for temp.
go to www.no-ip.com and get a free sub-domain "www.whatever.no-ip.com"

and download their update client which will keep your computer ip updated even if you turn it off and turn it on it will update the dns servers with in 2 minutes to your new ip.

they have tutorials there as well to help you out dns is confusing to setup in its physical form but you can map it out in 5 minutes in your head YET FUNNY isnt it . lol

hope this helped out and post back here so we can find out if all the topics i covered are not the problem so we can narrow it down!

I've had router trouble before with a Netgear. I know what it's like. What a pain!

Possible problems:
1. Your computer config
2. Your router
3. Your DSL modem
4. ZoneAlarm or other software

It sounds like the router is giving you trouble to me. Here's a quick tidbit of advice for that:
1. Unplug your router's power
2. Shut down all of your computers
3. Unplug all computers from the router
4. Reconnect your computers to different ports on the router
5. Recheck all IP addresses of computers on network and check the DHCP table on your Linksys.

BTW, it is possible that ZoneAlarm could be blocking port 80 (or even Windows Firewall is you have XP).

If you can access http://127.0.0.1 from the server computer, and not access http://192.168.0.102 from another computer, then the problem is internal. The problem resides in either some software or your router.

Hope this helps. Please keep us updated as we're trying to help you.

Another idea...

Install Abyss on your second PC (hopefully it doesn't have zonealarm installed).
See if you can access http://192.168.1.101/ from your first PC.

This would show that there is probably a software problem (ZoneAlarm or Windows Firewall) on your first PC.

Ok, thanks for the help.. im going to try some of this... and right now reply to some of the suggestions.

Cyberstyles asked if i had IP issues.
I havedyndns and their updater..
my URL is http://pixelmixer.mine.nu.

The updater has no problem updating my IP, so when I visit pixelmixer.mine.nu from my server PC, it goes to my router config.. which is what is suposed to happen. So theres no problem there.
Also, my Localhost, 127.0.0.1, and 192.168.0.102 all work fine from my PC.
--------

pkSML
I have checked my computer config many times thinking that could have been the problem also. But no help there.

My router seems to be working ok, but im going to restart it after posting here and see if that could help, if it does i would think it would just reset the DHCP like you said.

One Question for you tho.. Would ZoneAlarm still block port 80 if it were disabled and turned completely off? I wouldnt think so, but I had an nvidia firewall and that one blocked everything even when it was off. (driver stuff i believe)

I agree with you, the problem does seem to be internal. I dont think my DSL router has anything to do with it since its not connecting from another computer on the network.

I'll repost here when i finish resetting the router/connections.

UPDATE After reseting everything...

OK, after reseting everything heres whats new.
I switched all the cables around and reconnected
I also reset port forwarding to go to my new server IP.

My server IP is now: 192.168.0.101
My other PC's IP is: 192.168.0.102

I can still connect to the server via localhost and 192.168.0.101. When I try to connect from my other PC its the same old story, no connection.

I'm thinking more and more that its the LinkSys router screwing everything up.

The DHCP table is still messed up..
It ID's my Server as 192.168.0.104 which should be 192.168.0.101
It also ID's my other PC as 192.168.0.103 which should be 192.168.0.102

Could this be the problem possibly? I dont know much about LinkSys routers. or DHCP for that matter.. but it seems that the IP's arent matching up.. which I would think they should.

EDIT:
Here is my DHCP Table... I see some issues here, but i dont know whats going on..

Client Hostname: IP Address
:192.168.0.101
FAMILY: 192.168.0.103
Dustin: 192.168.0.104

Dustin should be the server.
the actual IP for Dustin is 192.168.0.101

I dont know how the heck my post got in there twice but then again i was hanging on by tooth pick last night or this morning [Yawning] so it could be i submitted twice lol

i think you said you use port forwarding that seems to me that your isp blocks port 80???? yes or no

do you know how to access ur dsl modem to add and remove services???? Im not saying this is available to you from ur isp but its wirth a look into.

As my isp doesnt block anything and i have no bandwidth limits but thats the way it should being i pay more for my dsl then others with 3mb dsl and so im told by talking to others about their dsl speed.

So what im saying if your isp allows you to add services via your dsl modem to offer to the public even if you used port fowarding you wont have to if you can add extra services and it maybe to if you can ad services they may not provide you with a pre defined list to add you may need to build you a custom list and add the ports you want it to use!

this is just additional information to check out for an alternate route

good luck hope it works

Yeah, my port forwarding (NAT) on my DSL router is all configured right. my ISP doesnt block port 80.

I have had my server up and running perfectly before, so theres no problesm on my ISP end that I can see.

I've also tried other ports and none seem to work, and I've completely shut down my firewalls to try it that way.

I think we've narrowed it done some at least.. it definately seems to be an internal problem... within my network

Here's a few suggestions.

I have an idea... First of all, get all your information about your connection. Here is a screenshot of mine: http://stephen.calvarybucyrus.org/aprelium/screen/screenshot1.gif.

Turn the DHCP server OFF on the router. This should drop your connection to the net and the router. Then manually set your IP address and subnet mask on your computer. Set the subnet mask to something like 255.255.255.0. For an internal network, the subnet mask must be the same on all computers.

About router pains, I had a wireless D-Link (it wasn't a Netgear - my mistake). This dumb thingy wouldn't even let any computers on the internet!
Here was the solution to that: I upgraded the firmware. I highly recommend you do this. You can get that at http://linksys.com.

About the rest of the story, with the D-Link router firmware upgraded, the internet worked. But I couldn't access the webserver from the outside world. So I returned the D-Link, got my $180 back and am using a Linksys BEFSR41 now.

I still dont have it worked out, but Im not able to shut off DHCP at the moment... once I get a chance I will update here and let you know what the result is..

Hopefully a firmware update will take care of it, but i think i may have updated firmware already.

I'm actually using a BEFSR41 also.

Anyhow.. I did another test to see whats going on.

I can Ping my other PC (192.168.0.103) from my server...
but when i Ping my server from my other PC i get timeout errors.. This makes me almost positive that its the router and DHCP thing, so i should have it all figured out later today or tomorrow thanks to your help narrowing it down.

Sound like you're close to the solution.

Here's my firmware version from the status page: 1.46.02, Aug 03 2004.

If you'd like to download this off my site, here it is: http://stephen.calvarybucyrus.org/misc/befsr-v1-46-02_code.bin.
Go here http://192.168.1.1/Upgrade.htm and load the .bin file.
-----------------
BTW, you don't have to turn off your DHCP server to manually set up your IP address. The only work you need to do is in Windows.
Sorry if this is confusing. My DHCP server is on, but my IP address is set manually.

Ok... i've come to the conclusion that my computer doesnt like my router... I dont know why either...

I did what you said earlier... installed abyss on the other pc... that worked just fine.. no problems within the network and no problems accessing from outside the network..

I set a static IP on my PC and it still doesnt work. Is there anything else that could cause my PC not to work with it?

Ehh.. Im busting my brain over this one.

Gotta a few more possibilities.

First of all, go to the Dynamic routing page.
What is your "working mode"?

Is it router or gateway?

OK. That's the same as mine.

Try the status page -> DHCP Release.

OK.

If you want, you can try this.

DMZ yourself. Click the DMZ Host page and enter you local IP address.

Let me know when you do this and I will try to access your server.

Sorry, it's not working.

Your IP is http://76.1.216.71/ -right?

Maybe we can try another port, maybe port 100.
-----
Set Abyss up to handle requests on port 100.
Set your router to forward port 100 to your local IP
Set your DSL modem to forward port 100 to Linksys console IP addy

How are you doing port forwarding?

Do you have any port ranges forwarded? (on Forward.htm)
Or do you just do UPnP forwarding? (on Forward1.htm)

Is there a conflict with any of the ports?

What proxy are you referring to?

Something like proxify.com?

BTW, I'm not getting anything either from your site.

There was a conflict originally with Skype using Port 80... But that has long since not been a problem as i configured it to use a different port.

Since then, i havent had any port conflicts.

My forwarding is done via port ranges like 80 to 80, or 100 to 100..

Forwarding doesnt seem to be the problem tho as it works just fine to my other pc.

Hmmm....

Try setting up port forwarding like I have it set up.

First of all, stop all port range forwarding.
Let's try UPnP port forwarding. When you click the forwarding tab, scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'UPnP Forwarding'.
Set up port 100 with the TCP protocol. External port will be 100 and internal port will also be port 100. Put in your local IP address and click enable. Click the apply button.

See if this does anything. I only use UPnP forwarding.

Ok, i tried the Upnp only thing and no change

could this maybe be some issue with my pc instead of the router? There doesnt seem to be any luck with editing the router settings.

OK, I'm almost exhausted of solutions.

Let's try going to the password page.

You should see a 'Restore Factory Defaults' button. It says no. Make it say 'yes' and click apply.

I don't exactly know what this will do, but you can try it!

EH... ok, after doing that, i had to do a hard reset to get any response whatsoever. The gateway changed its IP back to factory, so i spent a few minutes trying to figure out why 192.168.0.100 wouldnt access the router.. Still no change on the server.

I assume you got to the router config to come up.
The default IP is 192.168.1.1 and the default password is admin.

So, you forwarded port 80 or 100?

At this point, I think you should just try getting your server computer connected straight to your DSL modem. See if you can get that to work at least.

Sorry to break the conversation, but I need to go to bed here real soon. It's 10:23 and I have to get up at 5:30am. Yikes!

I'm afraid to say, but it looks like you may want to just get a new router.

I'll be looking for your posts tomorrow.

I Finally figured out what was wrong with my connection.

We were right, it was my system, but it had nothing to do with firewalls... I uninstalled/reinstalled/hacked/edited everything i could think of that would mess with Abyss. Nothing worked..

Finally.. I remembered that I had uninstalled Nvidia Network Management Software. The reason i uninstalled it in the first place was because it was causing my PC to become unstable and I would get the BSOD (blue screeen of death) everytime i would try to access something.

I reinstalled the Nvidia Network Management software and as soon as that was running everything worked perfectly.

Now to put my system back together after basically ripping it apart one program at a time.

Haha, luck to me...

Thanks so much for helping out.

Cheers!

I am able to access your site now. You have some cool graphics! :)

Let me know when you post some content.

I'm having some fun of my own. I gutted my dad's old HP Pavilion (*junk* pc) and hooked up some hard drives, memory, and set up Abyss today. If all goes well, this will be our dedicated server. Fun!
