I am sad to announce that the AbyssUnderground.co.uk server has died a very terrible death.

The motherboard/cpu has been damaged while I was adding more heat transfer compound.

The server is damaged beyond repair. This means the AbyssUnderground website will be running on a backup server. Because of this, the hosted websites and signatures may have to be taken offline until a new server can be built. No data was lost from the Hard Drives.

It will be a good few hours before the backup server is even online. Until then, there is nothing I can do.

I appologise to everyone who uses AbyssUnderground.co.uk and the hosted websites.

And why would I pay thousands of pounds for a computer that can do the same as my normal desktop computer? You should go and buy a brain...

Perhaps keep the normal desktop computer and spend the 'thousands of pounds' you've saved on paying someone else to apply the thermal compound for you next time ;)

A decent server can be had for about £700, the same price as a high end desktop PC. If Santa is feeling generous this year, the Novatech range are worth looking at.

Ive applied thermal paste to many computers. I just did it as I normally would to this one and it failed to work again. I still havent figured out what happened to it.

Ill take a look at Novatech's range but I have a limited budget for my new server/pc (about £250 tops)

Fair enough... You should be able to get a decent quality motherboard with hardware raid and a decent PSU for that, which is a good basis for any home server. Skimp on the graphics/sound, but buy a real NIC.

For reference, I have a couple of these http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/.%5Cspecpage.html?SR-0020T++ and woul d happily recommend them to anyone looking for a decent SOHO server on a small budget.

You can get a nice (real) server for about £100.

Also, a real server has better hardware than a regular desktop computer, and is designed to stay online 24/7. That's probably why your server got f***ed and my didn't.

You really dont know what your on about do you? The reason mine failed was because I made a mistake when I was putting heat compound on the cpu/heatsink, not because its not designed for 24/7 use.

I have looked on that link you gave but a lot of the images etc dont show. Maybe its outdated?

You guys and your servers are just over the top, cmx for start watch what you say, if I was Andrew I wouldnt be very happy when I read your post so lucky I'm not. I have one and only [A new in building process =)] one and I host my website, play High Graphic Games and I dont have a Problem..

P4 Celeron (Do not comment!)
1.7 GHz
512 megs of ram / 32 mb shared for Graphics 32!!!
40GB harddrive with about 10 Gigs left www.blazzingsun.com/server/
um I think that all anyone needs to know..

So basicly Having a new flash server isnt the way to fix things and I'm not saying that having a new server for your Web server is a bad thing...

Of course depending on how many requests you get.. o.0

My website gets about 1 request every 2 minutes on average. Doesnt sound like a lot but it is when you add it all up.

EDIT: The server gets more requests than that per minute because of the hosted websites.

The website needs to be online 100%. If your server packs in, obviously it isnt possible. I was just lucky I had a spare computer that can temporaly do the job for me until I get a new one.

chappy426, I wasnt happy was CMX said which is the reason I said what I said. CMX hasnt replied, because he knows that is best. It will only turn into a flame war if he does, and we dont want that.

I dont go over the top with my server. Infact, CMX's server is similar in speed to the one I'm using now.

Anyway, I have been looking on eBuyer.com and I think I may have found a new motherboard and cpu. As thats all I need I can keep the costs well down.

I suppose I did over do it, I always been a bit over the top but sometimes with no regrets.

In other News My ISP has doubled my speeds, both download and upload menaing that there may soon be another free slot on AbyssUnderground.co.uk although it may stay locked in light of other recent events.

You should get a UPS! How long did the power cut last? My UPS can support 25mins backup time.

I just tested mine with my backup server last night and got an astonishing 1hour 14minutes backup!!!

With my old server it was 25mins. True my new one is taking about 60w, plus 28w for router, modem and wlan so thats 88w but my old server was 160w total.

The new motherboard and cpu has arrived. Im now in the process of putting it together and installing a fresh version of the OS.

The backup server is offline because I needed the hard drive from it.

The new server should be online within a few hours, say 8pm GMT at the latest if all goes well.

New specs:

AMD Sempron 256k 2400+ 1.65GHz
512MB RAM 333mhz
128MB Radeo 9200se GFX
30gb, 80gb and 200gb HD's

Why the need for a half decent graphics card in a server? I'd have gone with onboard and spent more money on extras like decent NICs or more memory...

The server is now online but is experiencing random crashes. I havent yet discovered whats causing it but its just locking up and needs to be reset.

Before anyone tells me how stupid I am, its not the RAM. Im suspecting the GFX card.

this is something you might be interested in inquisitor

It would appear that ntl are to drop the usage allowances from its 1Mbps and 2Mbps products in January 2006, making those services unlimited again. We assume no change to the cap on the 10Mbps product which is 75GB per month.

Making the slower products effectively unlimited is an interesting move, and may help to boost the number of ntl cable broadband users, particularly as more and more ADSL providers impose caps or usage allowances of one sort or another.

i should move to telewest but i just can't be bothered with sorting everything out.

Yes, I already know all of this. I monitor www.cableforum.co.uk so everything that happens they know first ;-)

I would rather get upgraded to 10Mbps though because the usage allowance is still high and also the upload speed rises from 200Kbps to 512Kbps. That means I can host more sites and / or at a higher speed.
