Hi, i am wondering if this would be a good server for hosting websites on (only about 10-20 websites)

Abyss X2
Windows XP Home
256MB Ram
1 x 80 GB (Partitoned 1x60GB (System) 1x20GB (Websites))
1x10 GB for backups
512KB/Ps Downstream 288KP/Ps Upstream (Broadband)

and would it run ok with php, python, perl and asp lanugages, and with Ftp?

Youll have no chance at hosting 10 websites let alone 20. 288Kbps upload is just not enough. Even hosting 5 websites is pushing it.

I host 3 and my upload is 256Kbps up and its not enough. Thats the reason my hoting signup is disabled for the moment.

For running all the things you said then we need to know your CPU speed.

The cpu is fine. You have to remember that even hosting up to that many sites can still be problematic for your bandwidth. Like I said above my server only runs 3 sites on a 256Kbps upload and it still is slow sometimes and they arent very high bandwidth sites.

You should also check that your ISP allows the running of servers. It will be in the TOS. If they dont and you breech these TOS then you could be charged a hefty fine for doing so and/or your broadband shut down.

Still, hosting 10-20 websites is still a lot for a connection of that size. Even professional shared hosting servers with 10Mbps upload connections only have 10-15 as a maximum.

You also have to be aware of bandwidth hogging etc, one site can hog the bandwidth from the others unless you do my setup, 10KB/s per site. Even then only 2 sites would be fully accessible at this speed.

Changing the subject now! Does this sound right?

£0.09 per 24 Hours
£0.63 per week for 24 hours a day
£2.52 per month (28 Days) for 24 Hours a day
£7.56 per quarter (3 Months) for 24 Hours a day
£32.76 per year for 24 hours a day

(Thats the cost for electric for my webserver)

I personally think that that is a bit too low, does anyone have any ideas?

Acording to my (mums) electric bill its 2.530P a kWh

My electricity costs 7.48p/per/kWh so I doubt 2.53p is right

Sounds about right for the overnight rate, if you're on dual pricing.

Thats correct but this only applies for houses with storage heaters. The only difference is that its on a seperate ring main so this 2.5p during the night is only on during the night. It is cut off in the moring.

7.48p is about right for 24 hour rates so Id go by this figure rather than the 2.5p figure.

As the old saying goes, "If you make something idiot proof, they'll invent a better idiot". Abyss is certainly idiot proof, so I think this is a case in point.

Translation::

I beleive he is saying:

He has Windows XP ( assumeing his processor is 1.0GHz plus )
with 120 MB ram, And he is wondering What else would he need to host 2 or 3 Little Sites from this computer.

With that said, I feel that you should provide your Speeds ( Upstream and Downstream Speeds, Your Processor Speed and Type and then perhaps The more Knoladageable Peoples Might be able to Help.
