I am new to Abyss Web Server. I downloaded Abyss X1 and installed it and set up the Web Server Console with PHP. All of that went well. Excuse me for maybe asking dumb questions but here goes. I want to set up my own computer as a Web Server so others can network with my PC and upload files to their PC (mainly MP3 music files). Is that possible with Abyss X1? Or do I need to get a web site on the Internet and use Abyss as an intermediary with the web site? I went and downloaded "no-ip" but have not yet received a confirmation of my account. I downloaded 2 HTML editors, ie., HTML-Kit and AceHTML 5. Does Abyss have to run as a 'service' before I could do what I want? I know Abyss doesn't support running as a Service at this time but it is suppose to in the future. PS: I already created a Web Page with my HTML editor and placed it in the "htdocs" folder. So I am doing what the instructions say but I am stumped as to what to do next. Thanks for any assistance anybody has to offer.

Mike

Where are your music files located? How many directories do you wish to share?

If you wanted to share just one directory with music in it "C:\mp3s" in the Abyss console navigate to > Server Configuration > Advanced > Aliases > Add/Edit Alias > Add

In virtual start with a forward "/" without the quotes and enter where this directory should be located if it were placed in the htdocs directory and in real path put in the location of the real path "C:\mp3s" without the quotes...

Never put in the quotes, I am simply highlighting the exact value which would work using quotes...

If in virtual you put "/music" you would reach it like this
http://127.0.0.1/music

If in virtual you put "/music/mp3s" you would reach it like this
http://127.0.0.1/music/mp3s

If in virtual you put "/music/mp3s/greatsongs" you would reach it like this
http://127.0.0.1/music/mp3s/greatsongs

Now if in your music directory their are no html files especially no "index.htm or index.html" files what would happen when someone tried to access your directory is this...

They would simply see a list of the mp3s you have...

If this helps, holla back, if it didn't, holla back and if you got the problem solved please let us know :)

Thanks Victor for replying. I tried what you said but was unable to get it to work. Is file/print sharing supposed to be enabed in "Network" settings? It was disabled when I tried to connect from a different computer. I have a Firewall but I disabled it before trying to connect. Also, is: eg., http://127.0.0.1/music/mp3s/greatsongs (the URL link itself) supposed to be embedded in the index.html file I created in the htdocs folder or is the link supposed to be only in the song directory index.html ? Or is no URL link required in the index.html file[s]. PS: I created an index.html document and placed it in my song directory as you stated. Does the actual .mp3 file have to be embedded within the index.html document also? I am fairly new to HTML coding so if some of these questions sound stupid I'm sorry. Hey, if worse comes to worse I could just use an mp3 file sharing program, create a specfic directory for my mp3s, let everyone I want to share my files with know my handle and file names then they could search for those specific names, handle, etc., on a mp3 file sharing program and be able to upload them to their computer that way. I think Abyss is a great concept though and when they include the "Service" feature in a future release I think things will be much simpler. Thanks agan Victor for taking the time to reply. Best regards,

Mike

No.

You do not have to disable your firewall... You only have to give it permission to open up the port you're using to server web pages...

Please take note I almost went nuts when I knew I did everything right on my computer but couldn't connect to it... My ISP blocked all traffic on port 80 so I had to work around it... When I worked around it I forgot XP comes with its own internal firewall in which I had to give permissions to the new port after my regular firewall...

It is important to know the above URL only you can access... You have to find out what your true Global IP is... Go here http://www.aprelium.com/ip/ and write that number down... That should be your global IP number...

If it doesn't start with 192.168.0.0. and doesn't fall between that number and 255.255.255.255 you shoulod be OK... But if you're IP falls in between those numbers you're most likely behind a network and cant server pages to the public... If you're IPs first number is lower than 192 you should be good and try that number to connect...

Niether... the only links that are important for this to work is what you decide to call your alias that will reach your directory... Follow what I said above and you'll know how it works... Their is no embedding the link in to any webpages... simply give it out if you want others to reach it...

Holla back if this was helpful and holla if it wasn't :)
