k, installed abyss and i'm trying to get a simple connection going........i'm on bellsouth dsl, no router, mcafee firewall, and have done the following:
1. verified that i can access index page at local address 127.0.0.1
2. turned firewall off completely
3. tried connecting to actual ip address with default settings, no luck
4. tried changing web port to both 81 and 8080, tried to connect with actual ip and those ports, no luck.
is there something i'm missing?
thx,
ryan |

Somehow the server is not being allowed to run, here are my findings after i did a simple port scan:
Port Description
25 Simple Mail Transfer
The web server is not running somehow.
Are you running WindowsXP? _________________

i'm having a couple of ups and downs with dsl tonight, on the 'up' side right now.......
i'm running winxp. server is running, and i verified it independently with mcafee, it shows that abyss is listening to ports 80 and 9999. checked settings for web service, its showing i'm allowing incoming and outgoing tcp on port 80, nothing on udp. sound okay?
still no luck, though.....just tried again.
thx,

online port scan resulted in this......
monitor.dslreports.com scanning 65.13.38.162..
responds to an ICMP ping
does NOT respond to a TCP ping
does NOT respond to a UDP ping
Probing TCP ports with SYN packets
TCP probe finished
Probing UDP ports for echos
UDP probe finished
Scan complete.
Open TCP port 139 was NOT seen
microsoft netbios check skipped
Press results button.
Conclusion: Healthy Setup! We could detect no interesting responses from any of the commonly probed TCP and UDP ports. It would be difficult for an attacker to know where to start without further information.
TCP ALL : FILTERED No response packet was received.
UDP ALL : FILTERED No response packet was received.
===========
what do you think? i'm a little rusty on this stuff
thx,

Try enabling UDP, and double check to see if the XP firewall is turned off. _________________

UDP has nothing whatsoever to do with Abyss or basic webserving in general. HTTP is a TCP protocol. |

is this what the pre-console display should be showing?
Abyss Web Server X1 (v 1.2.3.0)
Copyright © Aprelium Technologies - 2001-2004
Web server local URL: http://127.0.0.1/
Console local URL: http://127.0.0.1:9999/
also, mcafee now does not show abyss listening to port 80, but shows "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" listening on two ports (not 80)
thx,

I have an idea shut down Mcafee, and test to see if it will work then. Because i remember when me and my dad were trying to run IIS over the intranet we couldnt get it to work, then i said did you disable the XP firewall he goes no, then we disable it and it worked then. Maybe Mcafee has a problem with its firewall. I remeber when i tried to install an old version, it wouldnt let the computer shutdown. Hey its worth a try, if it doesnt work then we can enlimate one thing :). _________________

k, just did another network port scan, this time with mcafee turned off, and got the exact same results as above. i find that strange......
shouldn't my system be responding to tcp ping requests?
i'm getting nowhere fast with all this!
thx,

k, i'll just keep posting new info until (hopefully) until someone cracks this case. i installed apache, and still have the same problem. i can access the generic index page (just like i can with abyss) using http://127.0.0.1, so i know both are running properly. i shut down the firewall entirely, still cannot connect using my ip addy.
thx,

hooooo-kay....finally got this thing going. i'm not all to up on the idiosyncracies of ip addresses-i tried a couple of different websites for port scans and finallly one of them showed "your computer shows your ip as <this> but your real ip is <that>. i guess my isp does this through some gateway (?). nevertheless, server is running (back to abyss) and now i can finally get going on this. thanks to the guys that tried to help.
