I've downloaded the Abyss Web Server and set-up a No-IP.com account. The D-Link router (DI-614+) that I have does not have "Port Forwarding" as an option, but does have "Virtual Server" settings that allow me to set the HTTP:// port to 80.

When I type in http://127.0.0.1, I can see the default "Welcome to Abyss Web Server X1" web page. However, when I type in the IP address from No-IP.com (151.200.242.88), nothing connects and Firefox timesout.

I've worked with sites like Tripod and GeoCities, but this is the first time that I've tried to run a web server of my own. The primary reasons for trying this are the learning experience and I'd like to be able to have a folder that my wife can access from school for her kids' projects and stuff (6th graders).

Router's Virtual Server settings:
Enabled - Check
Name: Virtual Server HTTP
Private IP: 127.0.0.1 (this correct? Should this be something else? If so, what?)
Protocol Type: TCP
Private Port: 80
Public Port: 80
Schedule: Always (can select certain days & times)

Router's DDNS settings:
DDNS: Enabled
Server Address: No-IP.com
Host Name: 127.0.0.1 (should this be something else? If so, what?)
User Name: (No-IP.com user ID?)
Password: (No-IP.com PW?)

If there's an Idiot's Guide to web server set-up or "We've watered this down so much that even you can understand it" guides, I'm all ears.

OS: XP, SP2
ISP: Verizon (DSL)
Router: D-Link DI-614+
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2100+
Abyss version: Abyss Web Server X1 (v 1.2.2.2)
No-IP.com version: DUC 2.1.5
FireDaemon: Lite 1.6 GA w/Abyss as a Service & icon in system tray

Many thanks in advance. Please feel free to point to the big red dot that says, "Click here to make this work" as I sometimes miss the obvious.

This should say the IP address of the machine your server is running on, eg, 192.168.1.100 if your router conforms to class 'C' networks.

You need to open up your local area connection and look at the status/propertys to see the IP address that is assigned to your machine.

Thank you. I'll check the machine's ipconfig tonight when I get home.

One stat that I forgot: ZoneAlarm (free) 5.x

Hrm....

I set my Private IP to the IP Address in ipconfig /all: 192.168.0.100
When I typed in http://151.200.242.88/, the "Welcome to Abyss Web Server X1" page appeared fine. However, when I went to Domain Dossier, the HTTP - 80 test timed out.

I added 151.200.242.88 to ZoneAlarm's trusted zone, still no dice with Domain Dossier. Open to any ideas.

Thanks again :)

OK...

Check that your PORT 80 is routed to that machine or sledgeworx.no-ip.com this is where your issue or problem is very likely to be.

Try www.dyndns.org and see if your service works after signing up. If you still have problems, it is likely that your ISP or your router ports are still closed.

Even Domain Dossier cant detect my IP address, the one displayed is not my IP address but a proxy address that they have set.

Just a thought...

you put 192.168.0.100, usually your machine IP would be 192.168.1.100.

If you open your Network connections, double click on your LAN settings to open the info box and change the tab to status, you will see the assigned IP address to your machine. What is it because if your router is a class 'C' one 192.168. the address should be 192.168.1.*** where *** is the machine ID and the 192.168.1. is the network address.

Double check as I only just noticed myself.

OK

You either have not routed the port to the computer, in your router settings you need to 'Forward' some ports, port 80 is one, also at the same time add port 8080 and one other random port number. Forward them to the machine 192.168.0.100, where I assume that your running the server from.

You have to make sure that the web server is listening to port 80 or port 8080 or the random port you chose, then access via your local address http://127.0.0.1:80 or :8080 or the random port number you chose.

If you see your server, you know that on your local machine your server is listening to whichever port you have chosen.

then try to access the server first by the same method above but replace the address with the machine IP address. 192.168.0.100:[portnumber] and if you still see your server you know that the machines IP address is set up in the machjine and that the machine will respond to that IP address on your LAN. If you have another PC, try to access the server via your LAN IP address.

Now try the IP address your ISP assigns to your modem. If you dont see the server, your issue is port forwarding.

How do you access your routers settings? is it a web interface accessed by the default gateway address? or does your router use a program or tool to access the settings?

Anyway, I have just tried to access your server, either your not fowarding ports to the IP address or verizon.net is actively blocking connection attempts. Is their any way you can tell me what ports you have set and are forwarding, it might even be set but wrong protocol...

Thank you very much for all of your assistance to date!! (much appriciated)

192.168.0.100:80 - I see the "Welcome to Abyss Web Server X1" page
192.168.0.1 - I see my DLink Router (Web Based interface with Router)

I tried 192.168.0.100:8080, but access is denied for security reasons. I set the virtual server for port 8080 as follows:
Name: DCS-900/DCS-1000 (this was the router has it named as, by default)
Private IP: 192.168.0.100
Protocol Type: Both (TCP & UDP)
Private Port: 8080 (set by router as default)
Public Port: 8080 (set by router as default)
Enabled & Always on

Should either the Private or the Public Port be switched to Port 80?

Other virtual server options that I have available to me:
Virtual Server FTP 0.0.0.0 TCP 21/21 always
Virtual Server HTTP 192.168.0.100 TCP 80/80 always
Virtual Server HTTPS 0.0.0.0 TCP 443/443 always
Virtual Server DNS 0.0.0.0 UDP 53/53 always
Virtual Server SMTP 0.0.0.0 TCP 25/25 always
Virtual Server POP3 0.0.0.0 TCP 110/110 always
Virtual Server Telnet 0.0.0.0 TCP 23/23 always
IPSec 0.0.0.0 UDP 500/500 always
PPTP 0.0.0.0 TCP 1723/1723 always
NetMeeting 0.0.0.0 TCP 1720/1720 always
DCS-900/DCS-1000 192.168.0.100 IP (0) 8080/8080 always
DCS-2000/DCS-5300 0.0.0.0 TCP 800/800
i2eye 0.0.0.0 TCP 1720/1720 always
DCS-3120 0.0.0.0 UDP 3120/3120 always

Again, thank you everyone. Hardware I understand, no probably building the boxes, but this whole networking and web server aspect is quite new to me (very interested in it, but do not have much experience with it --- as if that's not as obvious as the sky is blue and has clouds). Thanks again :)
