I read somewere that you could only have 10 people connecting to your webserver at any one time useing windows 98 is that true? I got that somewere in http://www.dslwebserver.com/ I don't know exactly were... I have winodws xp professional right now, should I just go and download linux mandrake as a webserver? I'm willing to use linux, either redhat or mandrake, but I'm afraid of all the other flavors.... |

Linux is basically commands ??!  That's like saying Windows is basically commands because you can open a DOS box  Not used X-Windows ? Pretty much all the Linux distros have a very nice gui straight out of the box, and you can make it look even nicer by tweaking it. I'd much rather use the Gnome desktop than Windows standard GUI, but I'd rather use Windows than Linux and all the major desktop eye candy things for Windows were resource hungry last time I checked.
There are connection limits in Windows, but I've never had enough users for it to cause a problem, and in reality as long as you don't have 10 people clicking a link at exactly the same time, no one is going to notice it...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314882%22
"For Windows XP Professional, the maximum number of other computers that are permitted to simultaneously connect over the network is ten. This limit includes all transports and resource sharing protocols combined. For Windows XP Home Edition, the maximum number of other computers that are permitted to simultaneously connect over the network is five."
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;122920
The maximum number of other computers that are permitted to simultaneously connect over the network to Windows NT Workstation 3.5, 3.51, 4.0, and Windows 2000 Professional is ten. This limit includes all transports and resource sharing protocols combined. This limit is the number of simultaneous sessions from other computers the system is permitted to host. This limit does not apply to the use of administrative tools that attach to the system from a remote computer.
I can't find an article for 98, but I assume it's similar... |

Anonymoose,
According to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314882%22,
Quote: | The connection limit refers to the number of redirector-based connections and is enforced for any file, print, named pipe, or mail slot session. The TCP connection limit is not enforced, but it may be bound by legal agreement to not permit more than 10 clients. |
This means that the restriction is effective only on other types pf connections (drive shares, named pipes, mailslots) and do not affect the TCP stack used by servers like Abyss.
We must admit that this limitation is still very undocumented by Microsoft. _________________ Support Team
