Hello!
Well yeah I got the same problem as many others, Abyss Web Server will only run at localhost(127.0.0.1).
2. People cannot connect to my web server. What can I do?
- If you are using Windows XP, check that the integrated firewall is allowing incoming traffic on the web port;
I dont use it at all.
- If you have a firewall or an anti-hacking software, configure them to allow incoming connections on the web port;
Tryed having ZoneAlarm completly shutdown.
- If you have a router, configure it in order to allow incoming traffic on the web port. Refer to the documentation that comes with your hardware to know how to do so. Please do not ask our technical support about how to do that with your router as this is hardware-dependant and we cannot give you support for what we have not designed (ask the router vendor instead or read the manuals.)
I dont have a router, and i connect to the Internet directly from my computer using ADSL connection.
- Some ISPs are known to block incoming traffic on some ports such as port 80 (default web port). Please ask your ISP about that restriction. If it is the case, configure your web server to use another web port (for example 8000 or 8080.)
Done diffrent portscans on myself havingt ZoneAlarm shutdown all of em showing port 80 and 8080 open, so my ISP aint blocking those either. With ZoneAlarm on I'm fully protected ofcorse, nothing get in, but as I said I tryed running the server with zonealarm shut down and still no success.
So I need som help becouse Im all out of ideas myself. _________________ Hellu! |

IF YOURE USING WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION, YOU CANT HOST A WIDE AREA NETWORK, no matter what application you install.
just upgrade to the windows xp professional series. |

And your point is what ? Are you saying you can't run a webserver that's accessible from outside the local network on XP Home ? If not try explaining yourself better, since that was what the original question was about. |

Because it's intended for home users. Duh. There's no reason why a home user wouldn't want to run a personal webserver... There are no recent MS OS's that you can't run some form of webserver on. Now, humour me. Post a link. |

hahaha! heheh....
yeah, you/we can run servers on all versions of WIN.
but these guys are asking for advise on connecting their Local Area Nets to Wide Area Nets. Most seem to be using XP and according to the simple situations they are in, i predict their versions are the home type. :D
maybe youre talking about an intranet using XP H.E.
LAN => yes
WAN => no |

Nope. I'm talking about running a webserver on XP Home. Not IIS. Not PWS. Abyss, Apache, whatever. Works fine. |

although, not impossible. 8) |

8O What do you mean by 'host a network' ? You said before you meant run a webserver. If you mean host a network in the sense of make XP Home a domain controller with remote user logons etc etc then no, but no one is asking that here, nor is it relevant to Abyss / webserving in general. If you mean 'host a website' then yes, it is possible. If you can't run a website on XP home don't you think it might be mentioned in the "Why can't people see my website" FAQ ? :roll: |

If I concluded with an insult I'd sink to your level :wink: Seriously, none of this was intended as a personal attack on you, I'm just wondering where the hell you got this idea that XP Home can't serve web traffic. Do you think it can't run Kazaa / Soulseek / Napster too ? |

My point about Kazaa etc was that they are also client/server applications - other Kazaa users will connect to your copy of Kazaa to download. This is no different to people connecting to your copy of Abyss with their browser to view your site.
I was asking you if you think these other server applications will not run in XP Home, since there's no way for XP to differentiate between what specific type of service a server is running. It doesn't block webservers, and it isn't designed to. In other words if it won't run a webserver, it won't run Kazaa, Soulseek or any other type of server.
Which brings us back once again to, where the hell did you find an official MSDN document stating that you can't run a webserver on XP Home ? |
