Hello,
I am using Abbys Web Server with a little experiance of web hosting (not much). And I an trying to get my IP address to stay as it is and not change every hour or so. I guess you would call that changing from dynamic IP to static IP. I am very unfamiliar with this part. I have a DSL connection from Bellsouth and it goes through a Netopia router to my computer along with others on this network. Can you please help me with this issue? I would greatly appreciate it. Also, the router info for you to researech is a Netopia R7100-C SDSL Router. Their website is netopia.com also.
Thanks,
caughman202@bellsouth.net |

If the IP provided by your ISP is dynamic there's little you can do about it other than pay extra to get a static IP from them. As Aprelium suggest, it's easier to use a dynamic DNS service. |

I tried using DynSite for Windows logging into 2mydns.com and it still changes often. Usually everytime I reconnect to bellsouth. You can test to see if it works. Now it says my IP is Bellsouth 68.211.16.40. But I bet it will change soon. I would appreciate much help. Does Bellsouth charge extra for static ip?
Thanks,
Nick |

You'd have to check with Bellsouth on their services but I'm guessing they do, if they offer it at all.
The idea of a dynamic DNS service isn't to give you a permenant IP address, it is to give you a hostname that constantly points to your IP and updates whenever the IP changes. This means instead of using your IP to connect, people can use a name that never changes.
For example, if you chose dcdjservices as your name with dyndns.org, you could have the hostname dcdjservices.ath.cx. You run their updater and whenever it finds your IP has changed it will update where dcdjservices.ath.cx points to, so dcdjservices.ath.cx always points at whatever IP your computer has. |

dude ... like others have said before ... you are better off with a dynamic DNS update client ... like http://www.no-ip.com ... it is free and easy to set up. with most of these residential broadband services they enable DHCP and set the templates to change IP's frequently to keep people like us from running servers. i have the same thing ... but through Verizon. you could call BellSouth and try and lease a static IP ... but i hope you have a deep wallet, cause they dont come cheap ... i purchased/leased 5 for my work connection ... and that came to about $1100.00 per month including PVC's to my remote sites. |

Heh, slightly different prices for consumer DSL i think; costs about £2 extra a month over here for a static IP :D |
