Sounds like the path is set incorrectly. The path for the styling must not be a local address. Make sure it's a correct HTTP URL. Check the HTML source code for the page in question.

You might look at phpAlbum http://www.phpalbum.net/ . It has the option of making private galleries that require a password. With that, you'd want to turn on Abyss' access control for that directory.
