I looked for php.ini in my windows directory, and it isn't there. I am using PHP 5.0.1 . I get the same error message:
cannot load MySQL extension,
please check PHP Configuration.

We have experienced no special problems with PHP 5 since its first Beta versions were released.
What are the problems you had with php_cgi.exe ? May be wa can help.
