i have an old Maxtor 10 GB hard drive that failed not too long ago and i was unable to backup all te files in time. it still spins up when power is put thru it but the reader is dead and just moves back n forth.

i was wonderin if anybody think i can get another used Maxtor hard drive, switch out the disc part, get the files i need off of it and put it back the way it was? has anybody ever tried it, and if so, does the hard drive thats ima switch it with gotta be 10 GB also?

DO NOT DO THAT. Taking the covers off the disk can destroy it if its not in a 100% dust free environment. You should never remove them. One tiny spec of dust can cause a scratch and render all the data in that postition on the disk unreadable and destroyed. You would not be able to swap the heads anyway as there are normally 4 of them in each hard drive. You would have to completely dismantle the entire disk to do it in each case and you would surely scratch or get dirt/dust or finger prints on the disks. Your best bet is to send it to a data recovery center who will do the work in a proper environment. It is costly but worth it if you desparetly need the data.

From now on you should back up data to removeable storage, e.g CD/DVD or to another physical hard drive.
