I just wanted to ask for some advise to reasure my self:
1 => can a psu burst into flames at any time?
2=> is there a 50/50 chance of it catching fire?
This is really making me very weary about leaving my pc even on @ night when i am in the same room?

As I mentioned on MSN its possible for any PSU to catch fire, whether new or old. I think there is a 50/50 chance. Its either going to work or it isnt. Full stop. Ive not had a problem so far, being lucky or not.
You dont hear reports of houses going up in flames because someone left their pc on. If you have had problems with the PSU then suspect it could happen, otherwise a perfectly good PSU has as much chance of bursting into flames as the next.
Hope this helped clear it up a little bit.

If it’s going to catch fire you will most likely have some form of warning. Smoke coming out the side, or before that if you’ve got monitoring software running you will get an overheated alarm.
If I leave my PC on overnight I will always leave my speakers turned up, and the monitoring program running, not because I’m worried about it catching fire but it overheating. I’ve already burnt out a north bridge when its fan stopped working.

Any monitor that provides an alarm should be fine. MBM does so just set it for say, 50*c as a maximum temperature alarm. You can even tell the pc to shutdown if an alarm occurs for so long.

It ought to be the same with a pc as with a tv. With a tv (crt) it's the dust gattering in it that poses the risc. The thicker layer the bigger risc.
Just take one day a year to take apart the psu and clean it so it's dust free and there will not be a fire. |

Its not just dust. Just something simple as a surge or a component inside the PSU failing. Anything can cause it. Maybe dropping a screw inside and shorting something out?
I wouldnt worry about it.

Does PSU stand for "Power Supply Unit", just wondering?
My Mom's PSU Popped lol.
