Hi All,

After spending AT LEAST 6 hours trying to get PHPBB working, reading tut's and manuals, installing and removing and upgrading (and downgrading) I have come to the conclusion that it kinda sucks. Most of the tutorials on the forum no longer match the actual software available anymore and things are different enough that makes for a mind numbing and fustrating task to say the least. I never even got PHPMy Admin to work although I did learn a lot about command line MySQL.

I just wanted everyone to know that I downloaded and installed YaBB in about 15 minutes from start to finish. Download it, follow the instructions and POOF, it works. If you, like myself, are only fairly skilled and do not have days to sort it all out then I would recommend it as opposed to PHPBB.

phpBB is simple to set up if you have MySQL and phpMyAdmin installed correctly. You need to be patient. All of the tutorials on www.trustabyss.com are up to date with the latest versions. You should thoroughly read them and follow them exactly as they appear.

I agree, unless MySQL and phpMyAdmin are installed properly, phpBB will just refused point blank to install (I had the same trouble myself). Then I followed the tutorial on trustabyss.com it worked first time.

Actually they are not all up to date and they even say so. At least two of them directly refer to versions of software that are now archived by the people that offer them.

Believe me I did read every tutorial I could find including the one you link and every manual as well. In my instance it simply would not work as advertised.

I had MYSQL running and working but the PHPadmin thing was hopeless. I knew I had PHP up and working because I have apps using it and I also knew My SQL was working as I could command line it all day long.

Obviously everyone's mileage may vary, I just wanted people to know that there are other options available.

Perhaps you should also consider asking over at the phpBB forums and not just complain to us? They'll help you, I'm sure....
