I have Abyss Server configured to install as a Windows Service, which is checked to automatically startup on computer startup. Once Windows loads, I get the small dialog box with the title: Abyss Web Server (Halted) and the line as you see in the subject above.
What causes this?
Why am I able to see my website still in spite of this?
I also have Apace Web Server installed as well, but is disabled as a service.
Thanks. _________________ Jerry Suppan

jsuppan,
That's normal. When Abyss is run as a service is starts when Windows boots up and remains in the background and shows no sign of activity or icon on your Windows Desktop (but you can check its presence if you open the Windows Services tool or access the console).
When you start another copy of Abyss Web Server (or if Windows starts it for you) it cannot run as the console port is already taken by the first.
So we recommend that you go to the Server menu in the Abyss Web Server window showing "Halted", select "Startup Configuration", select "Manual Startup", press OK. Then select again "Startup Configuration" from "Server" menu and choose the service mode and press OK. By doing so, the WIndows startup rules will be fixed and you should no more have the second copy starting. _________________ Support Team

Aprelium (generically :-))
Great! Thanks much for the thorough explanation. It's very helpful. Being somewhat of a newbie to self-hosting... actually mail and ftp servers too overall not just web server, I sometimes get hung up on minor technical issues that crop up. I originally planned to use Apache, but, that started getting a bit too techie for me. The configuring of that httpd.conf file which I understand 'controls' every thing began to get a bit overwhelming trying to figure out the 'how to do's'...... which I really don't have the time, nor the patience for. Upon discovering Abyss Web Server, it made my self-hosting a website considerably easier. After I get a bit more comfortable with the software, I intend to upgrade to the X2 version so that I can web serve more then one domain. Thanks again for your help.
