john76,
When you use password protected files/directories, the user names of authenticated visitors is logged in the access.log file. If you are using a scripting language you can also get these names and use them.
If you want a more accurate answer, please tell us more about the intended use you want to make of user names and in which context exactly? _________________ Support Team

I would like to be able to see who accessed the protected pages mainly for security. Information such as what ip's had used certain passwords, what things they had downloaded from passworded areas. Lets say someone who had an account, gave anyone he knew the details, I'd be able to tell from the different ip addy's. And to show if any wrong passwords were entered.

You could use Aprelium's Brute Force monitoring script to see who's allowed
downloading , you can find the script on the forum or AbyssUnderground :-)
