BIG Server Scare

Really big server scare this morning.
After waking up, i took a shower and headed for the kitchen to see what i shall eat. When i got there i could smell something burning. I followed the smell(it smelled like burnt toast). I followed it into the room where the server is, and the smell was very strong. "Noooo not the server!Oh shit what now?" I thought. So i ran to the server which just so happenes to be open cased and i started snif around in there. Hard drives, Warm nothing unusual.

I just then realized my little brother had burnt some toast. Oh well but that was freaky.

I wouldn't at all be scared, I make back-ups of my site after every major change (template changes, etc.) and at least once a month after that.

The same thing happened to me... But it was real.

One day after I came home from school, i could smell smoke. It turned out it was my server. The server was an old laptop... Well i had a backup so nothing was lost. The week after that i bought a Proliant 2500 (real nice server) for 400 Kronor (about 35 US dollars). Take my advise. Never use a laptop as a server, thats just stupid.

Abyss Web Server

Does anyone know what the minimum the server will need to run smoothly?

If you mean like hardware, i have a 266mhz processor, 96mbs of ram and all that stuff runs great.

About the story, who cares about your website if you smell smoke on ur server?
I was worried about my house, my PC(few rooms away) and my server. I have 10 bucks to my name man lol.

It would have been scary to have to replace something on my server(IBM Netfinity 5600). Since its a server and not a PC things cost a little more... But I use a backup program that makes backups every 12 hours of all files in the hosting folders. I have a server with 5 HDD's, so i use 2 for nothing but backups...

As for what the min is to run a server, just about ANY decent PC will run a server... Depends on how popular your sites become. You might need to upgrade your Processor and Memory and maybe your upload speed from your ISP(depending on what yours is). I would say to run it at least half way decent, any PC that came with a P3. But you might wanna upgrade to 1GB of memory, etc...

why do laptops make bad servers? Bad cooling? Well whats nice about towers is you can leave the cover off.

I wouldn't really trust a laptop as a server anyways... Although new ones might could handle it. The older laptops weren't really meant to be turned on 24/7 or anything like that...

You can get software/hardware that automatically shuts off the computer if it becomes to hot,etc

That would be a good thing to get but i am not worried about this old server, the CPU fan is the size of your thumbnail compared to new computers.
