|
|
I am using Windows XP SP2.
Suppose I have a folder, let's name it Protected. The Protected folder got some things which I do not want the whole world to know, just my friends can read the contents. How do I set Abyss Service to prompt the user to type a username and password when he tries to access anything in Protected? Thank you. |

Create the user(s) you want to be able to access the folder in the console, "Users and Groups" section. Create a group for these users. Add all users to the group you created. Use the Access Control options in the console to allow only this group access to the 'Protected' folder.

Is there a way in Abyss to protect a page or directory by prompting the (potential) viewer to enter a password only, as opposed to a prompt for both a userID and a password? I'm interested in this for non-critical security for family viewing of a set of web pages, and want to minimize their remembering stuff.
Thanks,

When creating a user, you really have to create a user (and need to enter one when doing the permission stuff).

I don't believe there is - but couldn't you just make the username and password the same and tell them to use it in both boxes? |

A. Moose,
I suppose that's the best solution for low security. Maybe I should post this in the Suggestions sub-forum, ya think?
Thanks,

Wspollack,
Pardon but almost I do not know to write in English. I have worked much in script by this subject in special, am educating and is fundamental the access without problems for young children. My proposal is the following one:
1. All system admits the syntax: http://user:pass@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:port/dir
2. It is as simple as to create a user and password and soon to validate through the console. Synthesis, this syntax turns the Private in Public. I hope to me to have expressed to be understood.

Pablo,
Your English is fine, considering that I don't know ANY Spanish. I was hoping to make it simpler. That is, if they enter www.billanddot.com /some-new-directory.htm, they would be prompted by a box that asks ONLY for a password. I already have some secured pages on my site (for special purposes -- not for family) that ask for user and password. I was hoping to set up the same sort of thing, but have the pages ask only for a password. (By the way, I have a dynamic IP address, so that can't be used, in any event).
Thanks for the suggestion.
Regards,

wspollack,
HTTP authentication requires always a pair (name, password). There is no way to use only a password. _________________ Support Team

You could use Javascript but then you would have to use HTML Protector to
hide the source code so no one can find out the password , hope that helps. |

It seems to me that the easyest solution in this case it to set up a single user (for example "moon") and set up the password the same as the username (in this case "moon"). You can tell everyone what the username/password combination is. That way everyone will only have to remember one the word and type it in both username and password.
