I've been using Abyss and ZoneEdit (to redirect mail and to redirect a dynamic IP address) for almost a year now -- no problems. What I'm wondering about is how with some sites you can enter their URL in a browser with www. and get the site, and with others (mine, for instance) you'll get a 404 error if you try that stunt. That is, say you can get to www.abc.com by entering either www.abc.com or just abc.com. Do you have to buy two domain names, or is there some other trickery going on? (Right, I know this may seem like a naive question, i.e., I'm not very knowledgeable in this area).

Thanks,

Bill

In ZoneEdit.com when you add a zone for a domain. Make sure you put one as yourdomain.com and then another as www.yourdomain.com. This will forward both to your domain. You don't need to buy another domain or anything like that... I'm guessing when you look at the zone for your domain it has just yourdomain.com as the domain name?

Go to ZoneEdit.com, log in, go to your zone, click on 'IP addresses (A)', then where it has a text box for 'Name', then shows your domain name', and then has a text box for Numeric IP. Enter www as the Name and your IP as the Numeric IP and click 'add'. Thats it. Let me know if you have any more problems...

NoName,

Thanks very much for your time and the detailed instructions. The updating at ZoneEdit went without a hitch.

PS: I tested it out, but it doesn't work... yet. ZoneEdit has the following information in the FAQ for this type of change, regarding when it takes effect...

"There is one thing to note, however. Your ISP will sometimes store your DNS records, in order to improve the efficiency of their network. Your ISP should not keep them around longer than an hour or so, so if you try again an hour after you make a change, then you ought to see the effects of that change without a problem. The good news is that other people who use a different ISP probably won't have the DNS entries on file at their ISP, so they will see the changes within a minute or so of when you make them, even though you won't."

...so maybe this will work by tomorrow. BTW, in my case I'm talking about...

www.billanddot.com

...and...

billanddot.com

In any event, thanks very much for your help!

Regards,

Bill

www.billanddot.com works fine for me and billanddot.com doesn't work for me... If under your 'zones' you have www.billanddot.com only, then you can add a blank one and it will work for billanddot.com.

Let me know if you still have problems. My email is nonameproducitons@gmail.com...

Thanks for all the help everyone, re instructions and checking. RoadRunner must cache its DNS info longer than ZoneEdit expected. It just worked for me, but took almost 12 hours to do so (i.e., I've been checking every few hours since I got up today).

Regards,

Bill
