Anybody have any experience with Merak Mail Server?
I have recently purchased this mail server and i believe I have set it up correctly. The only problem I have encountered is that I can't recieve emails from other domains e.g. user@yahoo.com etc, but I can send from user1@richardyork.ipupdater.com to user2@richardyork.ipupdater.com. I believe it may be something to do with MX records or something like that but I don't fully know what they are. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank You!
[edit]
I forgot to mention that I can send emails from user@richardyork.ipupdater.com to other domains e.g. user@yahoo.com. It's just the problem of recieving from other domains.

OK, log in to ipupdater.com and click "ADD" under the HOSTS tab.
Create a new mail host (example= yorkmail.ipupdater.com) and have it pointing to your IP.
Click "Save".
Click on your richardyork host name and enter yorkmail.ipupdater.com in MX1 and leave
all the other MX records blank.
It will look like this...
Quote: | Primary Email Server (MX1): yorkmail.ipupdater.com
Back Email Server #1 (MX2): ...leave this one blank...
Back Email Server #2 (MX3): ...leave this one blank... |
Click "Save" and see if that works. |

Nope, still not working :-(
In the Merak Mail Server configuration program, what would the "Mailserver Hostname" be? I have two domain names, richardyork.ipupdater.com and yorkie.ipupdater.com. I would like to use the richardyork.ipupdater.com domain name for the email addresses. I am so anoyed with myself for not understanding this.

To be honest, you should have read the documentation first, decided if you would be able to work out how to run a mailserver and then installed it. If you don't have 24/7 uptime or decent knowledge of how to maintain your server there is no point running your own... |

I have configured everything correctly and my main problem is now configuring my settings on ipupdater.com. They havn't got a very good web based administration system in my opinion. Like I said, everything works apart from recieving emails from other domains. Oh yes.....almost forgot,
everybody's gotta start somewhere!
Thanks for your helpful input into my problem Anonymoose! _________________ Please SEARCH the forums BEFORE asking questions! |

Saying everything works apart from receiving mail is like saying "My cars great, I just can't drive it anywhere."
Since it's Xmas and I'm feeling festive, here's a helpful answer... You need to work through :
http://www.merakmailserver.com/Learning/DNS_Configuration.asp
http://www.merakmailserver.com/FAQ/Merak_Mail_Server/Merak_Mail_DNS_setting.asp
The second link has a full section on "What to do, if you have problems RECEIVING mails from the Internet"

The Mail Server Hostname can by also anything, it is just identification of your server when is “speaking” with the other servers – you can put even your company name there

It looks like you have set up your MX record ok.
Found these mail servers for test@richardyork.ipupdater.com
* 5 richardyork.ipupdater.com
Have you forwarded port 25 on your router to the PC running the mail server? It didn't seem to be open when I checked, but your website was also down at the time - as I said in my previous post, if your server isn't up 24/7, there is very little point to running your own mail. People will just get their messages bounced back when their own mail server fails to send to yours... |

Thank you for your reply. I'll get straight onto it! I apologise for being a little sarcastic but I've been doing a lot of studying lately so I get grumpy very easy...lol! I will leave my computer running all night so if you get the chance, check if you can access my website. As far as I know there are no problems accessing it! Please bear in mind that I am only 16 and havn't got as much knowlege as some people in this online community but I do try my best and thats all I can give! I will try the information you have given me and if that works I will keep my computer on 24/7. If not, stuff it....I won't bother!
Thanks once again!

Tried several times overnight to get to your site but still no luck. I guess it could be me, I have had a few DNS problems lately. Still no luck on my work connection @ 9:00AM GMT though? |
