Hi,
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post these suggestions, but here goes:
1. Please add a forum for "MySQL Issues" to the board. You have forums for everything else Abyss-and-web-server-related. You might as well complete the set. ;)
2. Please add a forum for "Server Security Issues" to the board. I would love it if there were a "Basic Server Security Checklist" and also specific "Server Security Tips for Abyss, Perl/CGI, PHP, MySQL and ASP" posted and marked "Sticky" at the top of the forum.
Other topics: Tips about using various firewalls and antivirus programs, information about viruses and trojans and worms, Windows security issues, securities in certain software programs that you might install on your server like PHP-Nuke and phpBB or whatever.
I'm RTFM as fast as I can (LOL), but like a lot of others here on the board, I'm a novice at running a web server and Windows isn't exactly made with DIY in mind, as we all know. I think that we could all really benefit from the wisdom of people more experienced than ourselves.
3. Please add a forum for "Web Design & Layouts". Topics like HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java, using graphics programs like Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop, fonts, etc... I'd love to have one place to come to discuss ALL the things I'd need to know about running my own web server. DIY in a nutshell.
Abyss Web Server is the best free software to come on the scene in a LONG time! I can actually run my own web server—right on my own PC—for FREE! That rocks!
Thanks a bunch! :) |

Add to that "Make it even clearer that the Tutorials section is for contributing new tutorials not posting 1 line questions" :) |

Although it is very early to discuss about this, we think this is a good occasion to start a brainstorming session about the future of this forum.
Obviously, it is no more suitable for the growing needs of Abyss Web Server's users community.
So instead of fixing it by adding more sections, we prefer looking for a better alternative.
So according to you, how should the community site look like? What are the sections you'd like to browse? What kind of information would you like to find?
The discussion is open... _________________ Support Team

Changing the subject for a sec...
Just out of curiousity, how did this web server come to be named "Abyss" and what is the connection between that and the little globe spinning around? _________________ I.P. Daily,

vhsorless,
"Abyss" was the name of an old open source web server project initiated in 2000 by one of founders of Aprelium.
The old "Abyss" inspired a lot the current server but both doesn't share more than the name and a few lines of code :-)
The spinning globe has no connection with "Abyss" as a word. It was chosen because most people associate the WWW to planet earth.
In the new version we have replaced it with an abstract logo. _________________ Support Team

I see. Well, it's a great little server. I think I'd like to try the other Beta version that you're working on. I didn't see a download link for it on the Downloads page. I'll check in the other forum. _________________ I.P. Daily,

Hi Aprelium--
I am not so sure that this forum doesn't serve a need. I do support work on another forum and although the sites author has developed over 200 well designed, clear help files there is always something more that people will ask about.
I think that that is about as good as you can get...have as many "commonly asked questions" and specific "configuration issue" files as you can find time to put together and add them to your documentation here on Aprelium. (In a searchable database.) Then let the forum do the rest.
So that's my 2 cents worth. :-)

Oops! Nevermind. I've already downloaded and installed the Beta 3 software. Please disregard this post. _________________ I.P. Daily,

Axis,
Sure. There will always be questions that will be asked over and over again although they have been clearly answered in the FAQ or in the knowledge base.
But we're thinking of a "system" that will be "smart" enough to guide users automatically to the answers. It shouldn't be very complex, but if it can retrieve the MySQL installation tutorial when a user asks "MySQL icon is not green in my tray", we'll be very happy.
This "system" (we should find a better name later) should be also a place where users can meet, form groups, exchange their knowledge, and learn new things. This "system" should be interactive, fun, and friendly. It should also be useful for occasional visitors as well as for the "residents" :-)

The latest version of MySQL doesn't use the green/red lights icon in the tray, so updated installation instructions are needed. That tutorial that vbgunz wrote is now obsolete. _________________ I.P. Daily,

This was an example... By the way, not every user has the latest MySQL. Many are still running MySQL 3.x . |

I'm aware of that, but if someone comes to the forum and wants to install the latest versions of all the server software, they're gonna be confused by those old instructions. _________________ I.P. Daily,
