|
|
Hi, I'm new to this place as well as using my own computer as a server. I've already installed Abyss without any problems, but several viruses have started popping up since I installed it. No one knows about the site I'm hosting, so I'm wondering if the viruses have anything to do with Abyss.
Also, I would like to know what security precautions I should take and what exactly can people view on my computer? I'm hosting one site (a personal site for a few files) and it will most likely only be for my schoolmates to view (very few of them).
I'm a total amateur, so any and all information will be much appreciated. |

I will hazzard a guess....
No firewall
I also include routers, port switches and any other ICS gateway, HUB in with that too as they do not provide any kind of protection other than limited access.
Unless you run any security software like Zonealarm and AVG6/7 your asking for probblems, the fact your wondering how these viruses arrived shows your not secure.
Suggested programs to get hold of
SpywareBlaster from Wilder Security.org
Adaware6 personal from lavasoft.de
SpybotSearch & Destroy from safer-networking.org
AVG from grisoft.com
Zonealarm from zonealarm.com
Dont go near Norton products, any net admin will tell you that its not as good as they make it out to be, the thing sucks resources worse than a trojan.
Well that little lot will help you clen up you PC, Please not, that if you DONT turn off system restore, all those viruses will be restored on reboot, so turn it off on ALL drives then UPdat the scanning software and scan your system.
BTW, Abyss is nothing to do with your viruses, you can become infected as simply as viewing a web page. |

The thing is, I already have:
ZoneAlarm Pro
AVG Anti-Virus
Spybot - S & D
Ad-aware
SpywareBlaster
... exactly what you said I needed.
Is there anything else I can do? |

What OS (Operating System) are you using?
If you havn't already, turn on the resistant shield in AVG.
Are you running an FTP server, if you are and it's upload option is not password protected then, people will be able to upload virus directly onto your computer.
Also, for the maximum protection you should be using the most recent version of AVG's virus definitions. _________________ Olly |

goto www.bootdisk.com and get a floppy boot image and then boot up to MS DOS, run avg in DOS mode and leave it to completely scan your PC, I would suggest you update the AV signature befor you do.
AVG is one of very few scanners that will run from an MSDOS environment.
Please do not confuse the MSDOS box or the CMD line tool as MS DOS, this is something different if you were not already aware. |

Already done that.

Yep, the definitions are the latest.

Sorry, I'm not sure what Bootdisk does, so if you could explain in detail, I'd appreciate it. |

Do you P2P aka do you use kazaa or anything of that nature?
And a bootdisk will just boot to DOS, assuming you have the disk drive set as your first boot record in the BIOS....assuming you have a disk drive =P _________________

It allows you to make a bootable floppy 3.5inch disk for your operating system so you can start operating systems like winNT/Me/2000 & XP into DOS and it allows you to run AVG without windows operating system running or booted up. You then negate windows, it stupid restore facility and the virus from running.......... Waits for penny to drop........................ |
