I've set up Abyss (X1: 1.2.1.0) to work with PHP, but what I think the problem is is that I installed PHP (4.3.3 RC4) a while ago, and chose the "Apache" set up option.

I get a 404 Not Found error when attempting to access any .php files (HTML, other files and directory listings work). I placed the "/" in CGI paths to no avail.

Should PHP still work with Abyss? If not, what PHP configuration do I need to change?

I don't want to reinstall PHP (I'd have to redownload it, and I have dial-up).

Oops. It appears Apache didn't care that I didn't have my document root folder set right in php.ini, but Abyss does rely on it.
When using Apache, I didn't realize that when I changed my document root folder, that I would need to edit php.ini as well, as my PHP pages functioned the same.

So now, after scouring through php.ini and fixing the problem, Abyss is working very happily. Sorry to bother
