Hi, I had tried the free version of Abyss Web Server for many years,
and it was only a few days ago i decided to try the professional version Abyss Web Server X2 (v 2.4).
I am very pleased with it.

I am an Apache web server user, for many years.
I like Abyss Web Server X2 for it's ease of use, it's very user friendly interface is neat and one of the reasons i wanted a go with it.
Plus virtual hosts are set-up in seconds.

I do however miss the .htaccess files i could use with Apache, you can do all sorts of things with them, too much to list.
Probably what i miss is the rewrite engine, and banning domains just by for example typing in the name 'ntli.com' or 'bbc.net' for example would lock out that whole domain without need to go through all manual IP blocks.
I get alot of morons, and the IP range is always dynamic especially BT internet i find hard to block with Abyss Web Server X2.

.htacess files could also be used for country blocking, ie: block all of a certain country, with .it,hr,sk,cz, etc.... just for example.
Abyss Web Server X2 doesn't have this (i can't find it)
Country blocks would be welcome.

You can also lock out web browsers of certain kinds, or do blocks based on a users operating system or language of windows.

I would like to see this on Abyss Web Server X2.
everything i can do with an .htaccess files on Apache.
That would be great if possible.

I wanted to ask, on my Abyss Web Server X2 logs, it is logging only the IP numbers of visits, i would prefer the logs to show the host names as it did with my other server.
Is there any way i can do this? (name lookups)

Thanks for any help.

Jason.

theVOJ,

All the features you've asked for are related to reverse-DNS (finding the DNS name from the IP). The problem is that this information is not always accurate and many ISPs do not even offer reverse-DNS for their IP pools. Reverse-DNS will be added in the future but it is very time consuming (some reverse DNS requests will take up to 30 seconds to receive an answer, would you let people wait that long to access your pages?).

Note that Abyss Web Server offers another feature Apache does not have which makes it monitor attackers and ban them dynamically. This is in our opinion much more powerful that analyzing logs and writing ban rules by hand. You can activate it in "Server Configuration" > "Antihacking".

Note also that you can use the URL Rewriting system to do all what you want with the user agent type, supported languages, etc. It's a much more general system to perform any sort of complex transparent redirections based on any variable or information available in requests.

By the way, a .htaccess file is no more than a list of directives. Most of these directives have their equivalents in Abyss Web Server.

Reverse DNS lookups can be done by log reporting software if it means that much to you. Either that or you can do it manually in the cmd dialog.

I agree. This method would be very much more efficient (in terms of bandwidth use) than querying a reverse-dns-lookup for each new visitor's access.
