server speed/capabilites

I have not been able to find a simple answer to this question after searching - apologies if I missed the answer elsewhere.

I am running Abyss (obviously), PHP5, Mysql, phpbb with various mods etc on an older computer.

Although I never have more than 5 or 6 users online at a time, recent additions such as chat mods seem to be straining something. I am not sure if it is the hardware, mysql, abyss, or what.

What si the best way to analyze this? Could it be the number of current connections? How would I monitor this?

The hardware does not seem to be strained - using the tasklist I can see that the processor is fine, along with network traffic.

I would appreciate any advice the community can offer.

it could be a poorly coded mod, among other things, or it could be the browser that the client is using, or a number of things. Is everyone experiencing this issue?

Your connection speed could be too slow for the number of users you have.

My connection is is 5ish down and 354 up. That could be it - I keep forgetting how slow the upload is. Having added a mod that allows chat-like features everyone is updating much more frequently than previously, although much less information.

The further away my users are (physically) seems to make the greatest difference.
