I wasn't too sure if I shuld post this in the networking forum, but I wanted everyone to know about an awesome, free domain name service.
The service is DynDNS. It works great for dynamic ip addresses, and most Linksys and some Netgear routers can automatically connect and change the ip address listed to the name whenever your ip changes, or you can download a little program that automatically does it, and can do alot more than the ones on the router.
I use them, and they have done very well. One downside, you can only customize a subdomain, but they have many domains avaible for you to choose from. |

My "unbranded" DSL modem/router hardware supports automatic DynDNS updates. That's how my server http://loloyd.homeip.net/ keeps exposing itself to the internet. Anyways, I seldom use that now ever since I acquired DNS hosting services from ZoneEdit. _________________

I use DynDNS for their Custom DNS feature, I have the domain viahome.co.uk registered and hosted on my PC at home, DynDNS makes sure that no matter what IP address my cable (NTL) modem uses the web address always points to my home server, it works seamlessly and I am very happy with the service I get from them they also control my MS records so I always get my email delivered also. |
